D Day

Great pictures. Shows what they fought for. I'd remembered, watched a couple of videos and had a quiet think to myself earlier.

Always remember what the brave British, Americans and Canadians did on that day. But this was just one day where people fought. Rather than concentrating on the brave actions that occurred on one day alone lets remember the brave actions that service men took on all days of the war. Whether someone died in Europe, Asia or Africa they all fought in the same war and everyone should be remembered for that.

...there was also a wee band of brothers called the 15th Scottish Infantry Division...seems you forgot them whilst remembering?
Apart from that? I agree, many thanks to those who took part.

Yes. Sorry. Force of habit saying English which is really bad on my part because my granddad was Scottish. I'll edit my post.

When 6 June came and the offensive was launched and Scottish servicemen were among the first to land on Sword Beach.

Lord Lovat led his commandos ashore to the skirl of the bagpipes.

He asked piper Bill Millin to play to rally the troops' morale.

Later the Germans claimed they did not shoot him because they thought he must be mad.

Lord Lovat's men went on to fight their way to Pegasus Bridge where they met the 6th Airborne Division.

On arrival, Lord Lovat is quoted as saying: "Pleased to meet you, old chap, sorry we're two-and-a-half minutes late."

...from the BBC's website. Bless them all, whatever their nationality.
