Just stumbled upon this photo report. Utterly depressing - having to cook next to a toilet, bleurgh. How long before we see similar living conditions in London? We've already seen some pretty depressing properties for rent in London - one where a flat's kitchen had been turned into its own studio apartment was particularly depressing, but at least there was room to stand up in that. My worry is if we keep on increasing our population at an unsustainable rate, and property prices keep rising then it's only a matter of time before we get to that state :(

It'll never happen. If we're really that worried that humans won't have places to live, we'll build on green belts. It's that simple.

Edit: forgot to say that I am equally horrified. I would hate to live in that tiny space, and your toilet next to your kitchen...doesn't bear thinking about.

Quite sad and I do think it will come to similar here in the future.

Need to start a revolution to occupy all the empty piggy-bank flats in London. And stop couples having 7 kids because they think it's their destiny to procreate endlessly, are catholic, love benefits, or are just dumb beyond belief.

Really... why wouldn't you at least put the toilet seat down if you've gotta prep food close by!

At first i thought the thread title might have related to small cubes that workers have to sit at for their office jobs.

Frankly that's horrific and must do some serious damage to your mental health.

The problem in London is there's a bad supply & demand problem. There's not enough of a fresh supply of housing that people will be happy to live anywhere. That's why you're getting these rouge landlords turning things like garages and sheds, into one-bedroomed flats. If demand wasn't so high, then these people wouldn't bother, as they know they wouldn't get away with it.

Great photos but they are, remember, staged photos for publicity.
That isn't to excuse the fact it is indeed an incredible way to live. Not one I hope I'd ever have to.

Statistically the families most likely to have more kids aren't Catholic by a long shot. Try looking towards east Asian families. Not many of them are Catholic!

As grim and as unfortunate as it looks. I do wonder if it wouldn't look half as bad if the occupants were somewhat cleaner and tidier. The toilet and kitchen although unfortunate, could be a hell of a lot cleaner. If they can afford power and TV, they can afford to take more care of their home, no matter the size.

I don't think I could do it though. Tent in the wild yes, but this in a city. Too claustrophobic for me.

Not a problem if we build some bloody houses.

We are building plenty enough housing to meet the needs of our own population. What we are not doing is building enough to meet the needs of the large numbers of inward migrants.

The solution to this problem is not to build more houses....!

Good idea having toilet in kitchen - just wizz all veg peelings down bog - Will someone tell me why people leave the seat up - you even notice it on houses for sale.etc.

^^ This. You'd think that people living in such conditions would at least have a vague idea about basic hygiene, but apparently not.

Also, it appears that none of them have heard of cupboards and drawers. They're just chucking stuff everywhere. With space at a premium, doesn't it make more sense to be carefully organised?

They live in those conditions, do you really think they're the smartest cookies?

I don't know in a major city then you would only use it as a pale to sleep. If people want to live like that and save money then I see no issue with it.

I like tiny houses but that's to small even for me. Although we relay need to sort housing out in the uk, by bringing in cheaper, smaller, non developer buildings in. so much new super cheap and fast building methods around these days and we use non of them, let alone most of the world if you own property you are free to live on it in mobile accommodation, something we don't have the right to do in the uk.

wow - that's bad. I do wonder how these look from the outside.

I've always fancied one of those facy pods in Japan as they are a bit Sci - Fi but this is just squalor

I'd like to try one of those for a night, but to have everything that you need to live in a space as seen in the article would be horrendous. On the place side, at least there's not much that needs hoovering :p

That is actually quite horrifying... I watched a documentary about guys I think in China who live in internet cafes.... basically it's similar to that. Live in a cubicle with their pc some clothes etc bed on the floor. No toilet obviously because their is shared ones.
