I might afraid you're very first one is a fail.....

the word news can be traced back to late Middle English around the 14th century as a plural for the adjective “new” or “new thing”. This is a somewhat rare instance of an English adjective becoming a noun when made plural. Making this leap from “new” to “news” in English is thought to have been influenced by the Old French “nouveau”, meaning “new”. “Nouveau” in its plural feminine form becomes the noun “nouvelles”, meaning “news”.

None of those are true.

As far as I know there aren't any English words that are acronyms and which existed before the 20th century. Acronyms are quite rare in general use English even today and usually have a technical origin (radar, laser, etc).

Of course, something that's not true might still be interesting. Here's an acronym that shows that people were dissatisfied with the quality of reporting in the media quite some time ago:

NEWS
(Not Even Worth Sixpence)

Moon - Massive Object Orbiting at Night.

I like that one. In a similar vein, there's SUN - Subject Unobservable at Night.

Or, a bit of a stretch...MARS - Mighty Ares Rules the Sky.

Stretching a bit more...PLUTO - Poor Little Unplanet Tootles On.

MASK - Mobile Armoured Strike Kommand
VENOM - Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem

bacronyms but I like them.

M.A.S.K. crusaders,
Working all the time,
Fighting crime,
Fighting crime!

TWAIN - Technology Without An Important Name
TLA - Three Letter Acronym
PICNIC - Problem In Chair Not In Computer

How can I give examples of acronyms I never knew, if I never knew then? Surely the moment I know them then they become acronyms I knew and are therefore out of scope for this post. That leaves acronyms I genuinely never knew. But if I really never knew them then how can I post them here
