I have seen these posts before in Motors and people always say they should have posted here first, so..............

I was stationary, engine off in car parking bay when another driver and wife driving a Kia Sorento (04) attempted to park in the bay next to me to the right.

As the Kia swung into the bay it scraped my rear offside door and causing the vehicle to rock with the impact – the vehicle only stopped when I sounded my horn and waved my arms out of the air.

The Kia reversed and the driver said “Sorry, let me park up and I will come over” (Man was in his 60's/70's).

I took photographs of my car and noticed:

Scuffs
Scratches
Paint chips down to metal

I took photographs of my car and the damage and driver said to me, “I’m really sorry, I’m shaking”. I said to him not to worry and to calm down. Driver then said, “It’s my first accident in 15 years”.

We exchanged details. It didn't look too bad, so i said i'd take it home and have a closer look and not in a crowded car park.

Obvious options are

A) Go through insurance, have things sorted properly- at the cost of raised premiums for us both for a number of years.

B) Sort it outside of the insurance. Get a couple of quotes and ask for the cash.

I would prefer b, but obviously this is dependant on cost. Any estimates on the cost to repair this?

Beyond touching up if it's gone to metal and therefore pricey, you'll probably need insurance on it.

Were they also driving the VW? That parking is terribad

Sent an email to a local bodyshop, hopefully they can look at it tomorrow. Also requested a quote from SMART repair.

Not the news i wanted to hear about insurance :(. So how is best to go ahead with the insurance? I have Skoda Assist, so do i:

  • Call Skoda Assist
  • Call my insurance
  • Go direct to his insurance

Someone opened their door onto my car recently and I had it sorted through their insurance. I notified my insurer, who then forwarded me onto their third party non fault accident body who deals with the other insurer. At all times my insurer stated my premiums would not be affected since the other party was the one at fault and all costs would be claimed through them. Obviously I'm expecting a tiny bump next year, but at the same time I should have a lower renewal anyway given a new year's of NCB earned and "shopping around" before phoning in to lower the renewal (standard fair here).

Not even hours after I'd notified my insurer, the third party's insurer was on the phone to me asking about repairing my car...

Whilst your premium might go up, it won't be substantial I would bet good money on that. It too will be marked as a non fault accident and settled through the third party's insurer.

If you choose that route, then contact the third party's insurer directly giving the reg number and details of the incident. The insurer will then contact their client to confirm the details and determine fault (it's pretty cut and shut given the details you have given). They will offer to repair your car and will also provide a courtesy car.

You have the right to choose where your car is repaired, so if you know a good body shop, then by all means get an estimate done there, and forward that to the third party insurer, or if they're an established repairer for insurers anyway, then they can probably deal directly with them. You just sit back and chill.

If you call Skoda Assist/your insurer, then they will likely just forward you onto their third non fault accident body to deal with the claim for you via the third party insurer. I don't know what's included in Skoda Assist, so may be wrong about that, but you can just deal directly with the third party insurer and they should arrange everything assuming the other driver has notified them of the incident and admission of fault has been determined.

It'll be reassuring to get an admission of liability from the third party insurer.

In the absence of cctv and independent witnesses any disputed car park prang goes 50/50.

Skoda want ridiculous money, a local garage to me said they will do it for £200. He's dopping the quote at mine tomorrow which i will send onto the other driver and i'll give him a call soon to see if he will pay or it is the *gulp* insurance route.

Would you cough up £200 for a car park prang or go insurance?

£200 is a good price for that TBH.

They might agree to pay for it off the books. It will probably cost them more than £200 in the long run in premium hikes. Especially with even more insurance tax hikes on the way :/
