Games reboot PC when underload since I installed my GTX 1080ti

I have the following system
DEFCON 1 MSI Z170A Gaming M5 M/B with i7-6700 overclocked to 4.6Ghz
16GB Panram Ninja V PC4 24000
Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080Ti Extreme edition
Oculus rift with 2 Sensors
SSD Pcie Card
SSD 1TB Drive
5* standard platter drives varying sizes
Blu Ray Rewriter
Super Flower Leadex Platinum 750W Modular "80 Plus PSU

since installing the new GPU I am having all sorts of issue with games rebooting under load (if I crank up the settings)

could this be my PSU?
ive tried dropping the overclock on the M/B and the GPU which helps a bit but it still reboots the PC after a while.

Its not temps the cpu is water cooled and running fine and the GPU is well within temperature

any help would be greatly appreciated its driving me nuts lol
 
You could try:
  • updating the MB BIOS to latest revision
  • Latest drivers (no doubt you've tried)
  • Underclocking the card and testing (could be the manufacturers clock is not stable)
  • Updating GFX card BIOS (do this last - unless lots of problems like this have been reported for your card - and if there's even a BIOS available)
Normally, you would look at the PSU too but you've got an excellent one - would still have to be considered though if you don't get any luck with obvious checks.

The underclocking of the card is a good test for stability/integrity of manufactures clock. Or alternatively, give it some additional volts...

Always try to minimize number of unnecessary variables in troubleshooting.
Meaning default clocks for components.
 
cheers guys ill give some of those a go. I've tried setting the gpu back to standard oem speeds it last a bit longer but still reboots. Will updating the bios invalidate my OK overclock?

Which BIOS MB or card?

Either BIOS applied correctly wont affect your guarantee - unless you brick it (always a risk - which is why the card BIOS update was put last)

Was your clock applied by OcUK as part of a bundle build?

If so no it won't - but you will need to make note of your settings as it will wipe your OC profile saved within the BIOS. (Use your phone to take photos of screen/BIOS settings before flashing)

N.B. Always update the BIOS within the BIOS - use a pendrive, format Fat 32 etc...

EDIT - I should clarify i am talking about component guarantee - not the guaranteed clock.

You will need to contact OcUK about that. But I'm sure they'll be happy to help you with setting tweaks if your existing ones for some reason don't hold the clock with the new BIOS. Or post on the forums someone's always lurking ready to help.

The motherboard update is definitely worthwhile as version 1B - includes - 'Improved PCIE Compatibility' (if you've not got that version or later already)

And as mentioned this won't invalidate any component warranties - but your clock/profile will disappear and the new clock speed may not be attainable with the previous settings. Something to consider and prepare for - as outlined in my previous post (OcUK would be able to offer advice on this via the Customer Service Forums)

May be an indicator - I would test the integrity of the manufacturer's clock some more (if the Motherboard BIOS update doesn't help)

Have you tried underclocking (core and memory) coupled with a small bump in volts?

And memtest is always a worthwhile test. A few passes is quick and simple and helps eliminate a component from the troubleshooting process (to a degree).

I thought id up date you as to where I am now at. (I've been busy and not had a chance to look at my issue).
I've run a number of benchmarks stress tests etc like intel burn in test and prime95. I've done this under different setups, I have an old GTX750 for instance that I have tried in place of the 1080ti and i've tried single sticks of ram.

with the over cpu overclock running at 4.6Ghz the system was unstable running any of the tests. With the 1080ti installed it blue screened and when running 3dmark it rebooted.

After a bit of tinkering i have it stable at 4.5Ghz when running Prime95 and Intel Burnin but it still reboots running 3dMark with the 1080ti installed (even if i run the ti at oem speeds) This did run fine when i first got the card because its one of the first things i tried.

I'm thinking its either the 1080ti or the PSU that has developed a fault. I'm going to have another stab later with a few more settings.

Any further ideas or advice would greatly be appreciated.

Hoddy, you need to troubleshoot the system at stock.

Have you tested with the CPU at stock? Otherwise one eye will always be on the clock as the cause of your stability issues.

Load optimised defaults and set the BIOS: XMP, Boot options, AHCI (if used) etc (not clock) and then test the GTX 1080ti.

If you simulate the same issues at stock settings then as mentioned before try under clocking the the GTX 1080ti to try and ascertain if it's the manufactures clock at fault.

Memtest is still a worthwhile test too - and worth getting out of the way.

It could be the GFX gacrd, PSU, memory - or it could be an unstable clock if you've not tested at stock.

Hi Plec,

I tried last night to test at stock initially running the cpu at 4ghz and the 1080ti at stock (underclocked from the manufacturers figures)
all burnin tests work fine as does 3dmark. as soon as i run something like witcher 3 with everything on 10 seconds into game bang the PC restarts. Ive not tried memtest yet ill do that tonight. ive ordered a 1000w Super Flower gold PSU ill see if that fixes it too if not and memtest is clean i suspect its the GPU. When i first og the 1080ti everything worked fine so something has gone astray somewhere.

That was a good start.

You may be a little premature with the PSU order - but you can always send it back if it doesn't resolve your issues (although there's every possibility it could be the route cause).

For reference: If the PSU does turn out to be at fault it will be because it's a faulty unit not because of lack of wattage - as the Super Flower Leadex Platinum 750W should be able to run the 1080ti all day long without breaking a sweat. Something to keep in mind if you've paid big money for your 1000W unit and want to save some money.

Glad to read you're finally getting around to memtest - as it really is a crucial test, along with all the others your doing.

With the new PSU, and memtest run - you should have enough information to troubleshoot the problem and hopefully identify the guilty component.

Well ive finally got a stable system and at 4.5ghz and my 1080ti running at the speeds it should.
4.6ghz is still unstable but not that bothered.

Memtest ran fine so at least i know my ram is good too.

the fix was the new PSU so either the load was too much for it or as Plec said a faulty unit.

It's a flaky unit (otherwise all the spec me threads with 1080ti's wouldn't work) - the Super Flower Leadex Platinum 750W Modular should have no issues running your spec.

it should be under warranty ill see if i can get it replaced or fixed and sell it on. I just need to figure out if its overclockers i need to speak to or super flower lol

If it's under a year old post in the OcUK Customer Service Forum and they'll be able to advise you what to do.

If it's over a year - you'll need to work out the RMA deatails with Super Flower yourself.
