I'd say you should be buyer beware at something like that. Accept it and move on.

If as stated above the dealer said "the knocking noise is normal on a cold start for this type of engine and age. He drove the car and said it drove ok." Then the car has been mis-sold.

Reject the car.

Regardless of age or value, it is not as described.

Try some Cobra kit car clubs, Jag suspension parts are used quite a lot.

I agree, I'm not sure what his plans were with the car or why he bought the car.

Ive mentioned some of the replies from this thread to him and said the easiest less hassle way would be to ebay it as spares/repairs and provide the list of faults the specialist listed.

How you expect a 900 quid Jag to be anything but **** is beyond comprehension. It's MASSIVELY lucky if it's not, not normal.

At that kind of price for any formerly higher end car you are basically hoping to get a year or so out of the car before replacing it anyhow - anything else is kind of unrealistic (unless taking it on as a project as above).

Yea, a car like that for this cheap is bound to have problems. Ones that don't hold their value a lot higher.

Fair enough. Tell them to spend more, buy better or expect the worst would be my advice. I'm sure they could go legal but for me i'd write it off as I wouldn't have the time or inclination to fight it.

I think its a great value lesson learned!

At just under a grand it's hardly broke the bank. The problem with luxury cars and super cars is at a certain age they can be had for the price of a bag of chips. Unfortunately running costs don't change! A set of tyres or even the first service could bankrupt you so they may have had a very lucky escape only losing a grand.

I do think the dealer has been shady but it's not worth the energy of fighting it for a few hundred.

I have to agree, I know for a lot of people a grand is a lot of money, but this had "avoid at all costs" written across it in blazing 6ft high letters.

Tell whoever it is to put it down to experience and scrap it and find something else.

Why would they do that if they can get their money back instead?

I'd certainly expend a bit of effort for £1k.

You'd probably get the money back (maybe more) if you broke it up for parts. But you need room to store it

Stick it on eBay detailing the noise. He'll get most of his £1k back, maybe more if a few bidders go after it.

problem with these type of sales is that they are sold as seen. and if you were aware of the knocking noise and you STILL bought the car then its your fault and not the dealers. you knew the condition of the car and the noise it was making, price reflected condition and you bought it. you cant get any comeback on a purchase like that.
sell it for spares or get it fixed. should be doable on the cheap if u know the right people.

Not from a dealer no. Sold as seen doesn't exist and it's illegal to state as such as it affects ones statutory rights.

That said it would be less of a ball ache to sell it on than take it back.
