Alright GD!

I'm quite thick and have about as much understanding of anything financial as I do about the degradation of compost.

Will I have to ring up all the companies I have direct debits/standing orders with and register the details of my new card with them? Same goes with payments for things I'm selling on Ebay etc.

If it seems like an obvious question then I apologise, but this is GD. If at least one person doesn't;t ask an inane question once a day, you'd all get to feeling less superior overnight :P

I'm with HSBC if that makes any difference. Cheers :)

Direct debits should come straight out of your bank account not via your specific debit card, at least mine do, when you get your new card just re-register a new payment method with paypal etc..

This is GD but mags is answering questions with serious answers.

I'm very confused by this.

With respect, there's a bit more to it than just DD's doing what they should do.

OP - call your Bank; they're expecting your call because this happens all the time and there are processes and procedures for them to make sure you're safe.

Also, LOL @JOSH :D

Phone bank. Cancel card. Get sent a new one in a few days. They may be able to help with arranging collection of cash from a branch to tide you over while new card is in transit. Direct debits will be unaffected. Shouldn't need to call any companies unless you have something setup with them to debit the card directly (rather than a direct debit from a bank account).

You only need to contact any companies if you have recurring payment authorities set up which are linked to the card, but these are not commonly used except by scam companies ..... Usually women that have them for face creams and stuff. It's to try and stop them cancelling.

Apart from that, as above, literally nothing to be concerned with about anything else on the account itself / direct debits etc.

Dont forget to update new card details on Amazon and the like when it comes.

Phone bank, they will issue a replacement card. DD don't use your card number so it won't affect those.

you don't even need to phone you can just request a new card on your internet banking.

they always say the new card will need updating on any websites but for me on pay pal and Amazon I never had to change to the new card...

direct debits obviously are attached to your bank account number and not the debit card number

the other poster is correct AFAIK direct debit agreements have nothing to do with your debit card per say but simply your bank account

you're correct to tell the OP to phone his bank

It's less to do with the loss of a physical card and more to do with the implications of what that may mean. Yes, DD's will not directly be affected by that loss but there are teams whose job it is to manage the greater risk than the loss of some plastic. From memory, BDEE works in one of those teams and we have two very large departments at my Bank whose job it is to keep our customers safe.

well that was the point the other poster made, I don't believe he was advocating not contacting the card issuer too - obviously a new card needs to be re-issued and in order to do that the current card will be automatically blocked, it is just that the OP was clearly worried about direct debits and standing orders when they've got nothing to do with this
