2006 Cayman S 3.4 ownership possibility? (Poisoned Chalice)?

:p

on a serious note, those are some legitimately compelling arguments for the toyota, personally i'd take the cayman but then i like to live dangerously

Me too as someone who doesn't shy away from a set of spanners and has the place to store it wouldn't be too bad. Someone buying one used and needing a specialist to keep it running will need deep pockets and in that situation I would rather go 996.

I don't mean to sound cruel but unless you're the sort of person who has 5-10k stashed in savings (for when things go wrong) then you have no business running a Porsche regardless of age/model etc.

There are far more sensible options out there which deliver all the thrills, at a lower cost, you just have to live without the badge - and a petrolhead should't really be that concerned with the badge anyway.

A Porsche is completely the opposite, it's as over-complicated as possible and parts are comically expensive.

Other than replament disks, I've found the parts fairly reasonable. They are a pretty cheap car to run in all honesty.

If your very lucky and nothing goes wrong yea. But Porsche's prices are some of THE highest. You really do need a cash stash just in case.

On the up side, if you buy one of the old ones now it will probably start going up in value soon. Since people aren't liking the new 4 cylinder one.

This is simply not true, if you avoid the ones with fragile engines there is very little else that would cost a huge sum to put right. Consumables are not that pricey when not paying official Porsche centre prices, air conditioning systems and front radiators are the more common issues that are going to be £500-1k to fix but outside of that they are reliable cars. Servicing is every two years and a minor service is around £400 and a major up to £800 if you need plugs. Specialists would be cheaper still.

Of course some models, Turbo, GT3, GT2 have some greater risk but they're a different ballpark in purchase price.
