May be changing jobs which will require possibly a serious commute.

I currently have a car that would give me petrol costs of may 15-20 quid a day price

Is it a bad idea to get an ex demo Renault zoe that I can charge at said new job with 0 Road tax?

Apparently can be had for 10k
 
By serious commute, what range are you talking? Electric cars aren't known for distance capability.

edit, actually this is moot. I thought they could only do like 60-100 miles but apparently the Zoe can do 250. I'd be surprised if you commuted 250 miles a day..

Define serious commute. SWMBOs had a Zoe for coming up on 2 years, great car but if you're doing more than 60 miles each way (realistic winter range with a bit spare) you'll definitely need to charge fully at work.
 
We had an early model. It was bloody great for my wife and I used to use it to commute 72 miles round trip occasionally.

I wouldn't have one if the commute was longer than 70 miles as in the winter you can get back with only 5-10 miles left (heaters/lights/cold weather)
Only reason we didn't get another one was because we're moving house and the charger has to remain in place for 3 years.

Yeah the battery rental is the tough bit. It makes a used eco diesel an option

A second car would be essential. It's just what I would get. The zoe is the only electric option I can see.

Interesting use case, the new 40kW battery would be fine charging once a day (or rather overnight) and with the new battery there is an unlimited mileage option for £110/month which is only half of the (back of a beer mat) fuel savings you should see. On the other side the car itself does seem to depreciate very quickly so worth taking into account when comparing TCO vs. a diesel.

I'd suggest joining https://www.facebook.com/groups/RenaultZoeOwnersClub/ as there's a wealth of information on there and a club dealer who seems be be able to offer best pricing.
 
Don't believe the official figures. They test them in the perfect conditions when the batteries are brand new. Take about 25% off at least.

They are out there for 10k ex demo I've seen them. Or not far off anyway.

It looks like with the unlimited mileage option (110) if there are no catches it would be much cheaper than a new diesel.

But its much closer when you look at an older diesel.

Basically I'm trying to figure out how much more pay on want if I went for a job 50-60 miles away.

Looks like 300 ish a month (lease of battery + finance deal) even a 5k pay increase wouldn't cut it.

Although holidays in UK would cost no fuel etc

Ex demos come up around £11k though given the price volatility and the fact you need to lease the battery I personally think you'd be daft to buy one so focus should be on the monthly overall cost.

Couldn't be further from the truth, I know 2 other owners personally who bought them for the same reason we did, a cheap way to get a new car when looking at overall ownership cost over 2-3 years due to cheap lease deals and low charging costs.

Problem you have is that a £5k pay increase doesn't really cut it running any car for that kind of mileage. Even assuming very low running costs of 20p/mile that's more than the £4000 you would take home though don't know how it compares to your commute and costs today so maybe it could leave you slightly better off. Problem you have is to get those kind of running costs you are looking at the holy grail of a low cost diesel that doesn't break down.
 
I don't know if true, but I would expect the electric car to have lower maintenance/servicing costs. Depreciation might be an issue.

Why the Zoe and not the Leaf?
 
Holidays in the UK are the last thing I'd want to be doing if I was spending 3 hours a day in a car just to work. Even if your current commute is 1 hour return, 2 hours extra is over 19 whole days in a year, or ~66 days of overtime you're not being paid for. If you're renting now, I'd move for that.

For a battery owned one? I doubt it - that's for a battery lease. Factor £110 into the entire future ownership of the car. That's half of your savings gone already.

If I were in your shoes (and I was not that long ago) - I'd be looking at LPG.
