hello

looking for some advice about opening my son a bank account. hes 15 and apparently it will be a lot easier to open one just now as opposed to when he turns 16??

question is can one be opened online or do i need to visit a branch with him in person??

It varies, Santander looks to be doable online whereas Barclays seems to be in branch only.

Whatever you do, don't open Halifax. Open something else and then in a year's time, transfer him to Halifax and get their £75 switching bonus for nada :)

As for opening online, I've opened accounts with Tesco, Barclays, Santander, Halifax and Lloyds all online with no need to go in branch. I have no idea how this works with a minor however.

What makes you say this?

With regards to his age, you will probably need to take him in to a branch to open an account due to having no digital footprint to verify him at all.

well im assumin that once he turns 16 i wont have the parental righs and he will be classed, legally, as old enough to do it on his own??

How on earth is this simple process stressful?!
i will need to do it with him before he starts work/apprenticeship etc and he turns 16 in about 8 weeks time which means i will need to take him during the school summer holidays, now you try sitting in a bank with a 15 year old with autism and your 5 other children all running about daft and basically creating havoc and then come back and tell me its not stressful

Then you just phone the relevant branch, explain the situation and ask for an appointment in a private room to go through the account opening process.

thats exactly what i plan on doing. i was kinda hoping that it could/would have all been done online and then a case of taking him down and a 10 min job to check his paperwork but i dont think that will be th case.

shall contact the bank over the weekend and see what i can do

Why do you need to take 5 other kids with you?

Take your son while the others are at school, it will be quieter in a branch and easier for him. Phone or pop in to the branch alone first to make an appointment and you can plan ahead from there.

the schools finish for summer this tuesday and all appointments are 2 weeks down the line with the RBS or bank of scotland
