Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier sets sail tonight

so the typhoons could deal with that? can the f25 for that matter?

the bulk of our airforces work seems to be ground support/bomb trucks now.

Its why I think it is madness we don't have more Type 45s especially with the coming upgrades for the packages they use as they can dominate the skies while even our older aircraft have very good ground attack capabilities thanks to the likes of Brimstone. Sickens me that for only about 2bn more we could have had 12 instead of the current 6 as well - incredibly short sighted whoever signed off on that change.

how far inland can the t45's cover airspace? i didnt realise they had that kind of range!

Can track up to 1000 aircraft over 400km. The anti-aircraft missiles can start doing their stuff at 120km, at a rate of 8 missiles in 10 seconds. Not bad really.

Their sensory range extends to about 250 miles - currently their long range high performance anti-air missiles have a range of about 80 miles but that isn't the upper end of their capability and there is a "new technology" version coming out which is capable of significantly increased range. With fire control system integration with say a harrier they could be used to engage targets successfully at the edge of the ship's own range and with the speed of the missile get there pretty quickly.

Obviously it isn't ideal but it would work to give a fair operational zone and quite a nasty combination of anti-air and ground attack capabilities.

so how would that be able to replace airsupiriority fighters sorry>

but 80 miles wouldnt get our fighters far in the countries we're fighting in?

80 miles isn't the absolute max range of those missiles (potentially its lower against low flying aircraft and higher against higher flying stuff - but integrated with another aircraft it should be possible to extend it towards its absolute max) but there is a new technology version available soon that significantly increases their range.

At the end of the day its better than nothing as a stop gap until something else is put into place :s

but instant say afghanistan about 300 miles from the ocean?

Harrier's max effective combat range isn't much more than that so wouldn't be a solution there anyhow - I'm only suggesting it as a stop gap until we had more modern aircraft anyhow atleast it would give us some modern capabilities even with some restrictions.
