Cardinal George Pell charged with sex offences

Riiiiiight.

Because in no way did he leave the country when investigations started into child sex abuse, was told to attend a public inquiry and then stated he was 'too ill' to return.

Yup, completely innocent behaviour right there!
Has he been convicted?

Caught this on the news this morning and it showed you him greeting people leaving the church then along comes a young lad, eyes light up and he holds onto him quite a bit longer then everyone else lol

What is it with these dudes and diddling kids?

It's almost as if when people try to proclaim how virtuous they are, they are actually hiding something/compensating.

well there are significantly more gay people in the priesthood (in % terms) than in wider society - part of that might be the celibacy thing, they're brought up Catholics, they know they're gay and believe it is a 'sin' etc... this is a career they can chose where being unmarried isn't going to lead to questions being asked etc...

I wonder if there is a similar effect for the paedos, there might also be a bit of a cross over between both groups - the whole older gay/young boy thing (I not implying that all gay priests are a danger here)

also perhaps the celibacy thing in itself has a weird effect on people - it is unnatural to keep on repressing your sexuality, yet all these men are supposed to believe that even masturbation is a sin, that perhaps has a strange effect

The Catholic church are disgusting, my ex was repeatedly raped as a child, when it was reported to the police, the police told the church and the vicar was whisked away to Ireland to avoid a criminal conviction. I hate them.

Exactly, and what is to stop him from going back to Aus to face these charges? I am presuming he is still at the Vatican.

The 'Church' will hide anything.

Religion - That unique club that has caused more deaths and abuse in history, but still paints itself as the only way to live.

Sooner we evolve and get rid of it all, the better.

No. he hasn't been convicted. Personal views aside, this is a typical "guilty before proven innocent" response. Whatever your opinions of the what the guy stands for, he is still a human being with an entitlement to his good name, same as every other good sir on this forum.

Not sure about the gay thing, but certainly the data shows most victims of abuse by priests are male.

The Church has no higher a rate of abuse - as far as the available data goes - than any other organisation. Most abuse occurs in the family. Other organisations, religious and non-religious, are the same, if not worse, and any institution will tend to "cover up".

Regarding Pell, I have quite a few friends in Rome who have come across him and who know others who've worked with him. Most will say he's a solid bloke who's worked hard to sort out the whole abuse scandal.

Yes, he is going back to face the charges, and to clear his name, as he will put it. Yes, he was too ill to travel on one of the two occasions detectives wanted to interview him about abuse in Australia, but on that occasion it was done via skype instead. Reasonable?

What difference does that make? If he did it he did it, convicted or not, his behaviour is indicative of guilt. We can only go on the available information.

That's kinda why trials were invented, to hear both sides of the story. Shall we wait until the jury makes a decision rather than base our judgement on what the media say?

It's a forum, we should be free to speculate on news stories as they develop, otherwise you might as well lock every thread like this until the trial is over.

It's perfectly reasonable to comment on someones behaviour, indeed the courts will make inferences based on this sort of conduct.

Yet we don't know anything about his behaviour. Have you met the guy? All we're going off are third hand (and more) stories and here's some possible news for you - people lie. As can be seen from this thread people clearly have agendas against the church.
Rather than nail his balls to the wall I'll wait for the trial outcome.
I remember what happened to Cliff Richard after all.
And even farther back than that; read up on Fatty Arbuckle.

At the moment he is innocent in the eyes of the law. Until he's actually convicted in a court of law.
Although with anything to do with this sort of thing it's "Innocent until speculated guilty" these days.

Tale as old as time, the more vulturous you make yourself look in the eyes of others, the bigger the hypocrite that person usually is. And i speak about this in all religions, all the same

Yep,

Take Saudi Arabia for example, you've got a bunch of religious fanatics who claim to live by the book but apparently behind closed doors it's totally the opposite and many many stories posted across various sites are all similar. They drink loads, do drugs and hire a ton of prostitutes (to do REALLY messed up things...).

Yet when not behind closed doors? apparently they're all perfect individuals.

Catholics have vicars?

Sounds like the police were quite remiss there? Was there any investigation to follow up?

Priest/vicars .. same thing.

Nope, he got away scott free .. my ex and her family were devout Catholics and looked up to Priests like they were Gods so they didn't want to press charges.

last thing my ex heard was he was still in Ireland and alive, probably about 70+ now.

So earlier this week Cardinal George Pell had to drag is pompous ass into an Australian court room, where as expected he pled not guilty to all charges. Now the inevitable long process begins of trying to prove his guilt. IIRC the case won't begin till September this year and is likely to go on for months.

Anyhow, I came across this song by Tim Minchin on YT. It's about Pell and the abuse claims and it's hilarious and also quite a good song too. Enjoy.
