Are gay folks getting too much attention?

While i was growing up in the 80's and 90's and always heard banded around that 10% of the population is gay or bi. But i'm starting to think while they're making more noise than ever i think 10% is an over-exaggeration. I did see one report say it was only about 3%. In my building we're over 3500 people and they held a pride event and only about 100 people turned up. And most of those were straight people turning up to support.

And my multinational company of 66k employess has 15% identifying as LGBT.

There will obviously be swings for different industries, media, travel and leisure are likely to have a higher percentage than others.

Well this is what surprised me, although i work in IT, i'd say 80% of the agencies in the building are creative media type services. One agency i work for in the building has 130 people, extremely liberal (They were in morning when Brexit and Trump happened), young (in their 20's), creative types. I think there's only 2 or 3 people there who are LGBT.

Then there must be a company somewhere who massively over-indexes to balance it all out :D

This is the kind of attitude that makes things worse not better. You're the root cause of people getting ****** off and creating homophobia when none existed before. So don't be surprised when you get knocked back on your heels when people don't always welcome you when you display this kind of attitude.

Didn't realise it was my fault that people don't like gays. Maybe we should just shut up and go and die in a corner and be grateful for the same but different rights we are so graciously awarded by the benevolent overlords.

If it weren't for people like you there would be no animosity or overtly camp people "shoving it down your throat". Sorry to inconvenience you with our existence.

You sound bit excitable, go lay in a corner for a while and calm down. You're not doing yourself any favors charging around like a bull in a china shop. You made an unfounded assumption about me so let me make one about you. Everyone, even other gays find nosy OOT gays like you annoying (You'd know this if you actually read the thread)

I'm not an OOT gay, camp gay. I am a "straight acting" gay who never came out of the closet. Most gays don't have a problem with the OOT ones either. It's almost as if gay people were as diverse as straight people and not one big amorphous blob.

From your tone you must thing I am hysterically hyperventilating at the stupid comments in this thread. Couldn't be farther from the truth. I am usually a live and let live kinda guy but the comments in this thread riled me up. The very fact this thread exists is the reason why it exists.

A bunch of straight, white, guys wondering what all the fuss is about.

The last line shows that you haven't read the thread or just skim read. There are at least 2 gay posters here and we're all having a reasonable conversation until you showed up. And yes it does come across your hysterically hyperventilating or some kind of militant gay. Claim down and engage in the conversation properly, you're not come across well not because your gay but because you're not properly engaging.

Anyone less that 50 does not really care whether you are LGBTATFAGLO or whatever the Guardian comes up with this week.

Its the "I am gay" speech and then expect special treatment which grates my nerves somewhat.

I get it. I was a bit too full on I apologise. Surely you can understand a lifetime of "I've lots of gay friends but..." "I don't care what goes on in the bedroom but..." "Why do they need SPECIAL treatment." "It's disgusting and I don't want to see it" "Why do they need to shove it down my throat" crap that I've read in this thread makes people angry?

Two gay people isn't a consensus. Overtly camp people exist for two reasons.

1) Its a coping/defense mechanism - Feminine gays are seen as harmless and a source of entertainment, see almost every gay on TV.
2) Its defiance in the face of all the nasty comments I've seen in this thread. All the discrimination and violence we see aimed at us every day.

See what I mean, insults then somehow asking to be treated with a bit of respect and have the same rights is all of a sudden expecting special treatment.

No one cares you like ****, people care if you are a ****.
It's more than just about gay people and clearly people do care if you like ****. See all the people who get beat up and murdered I could pull any number of news articles that say otherwise.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young LGBT people. 40% of Transgender people have attempted suicide. They aren't doing this for attention...

I remember when living in Cheshire the great and effective Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Sir James Anderton CBE, KStJ, QPM, DL describing the public sexual acts the homosexuals of the then new Canal Street area were seen "enjoying" by members of the passing public as "swirling around in a cess pit of their own making". How times have changed and heaven knows what he would think of the tawdry "gay parades" that are now rife. I have always tolerated homosexuality so long as the perpetrators keep it to themselves and avoid messing with the under age or vulnerable. But that no longer seems to quiet them, they seem insistent we all love them and find their public displays of homosexuality "normal" and in good taste. If only they'd just shut up, and get on with whatever they want to do behind closed doors... And avoid pool parties, of course, as a "family entertainer" has found to the cost of his career. Making it legal was never going to be enough for the more attention seeking homosexuals now rampant in our media.

I think some in this thread need to calm down.

As a gay person I don't want special treatment nor do I want to shove anything down anyone's throat (no pun intended).

I think the idea by showing more LGBT things than usual on TV is because many gay people work in the media and perhaps want to get the people used to the idea that they might see something they won't like BUT shouldn't resort to violence as some do.

But there are also some hetrosexuals that may see one or two gays on TV and then say "why are they shoving it in our faces" when they have not considered 10000+ straight relationships they saw on TV that week. They have just noticed the two and had a fit. Fact of the matter is I've had to see lots of titties and lady parts over the years.... Doesn't disgust me seeing most types of sex between people..... I don't complain about it... If it's too much... Id turn it off.

I also get the idea that many straight and gay people who perceive that we have equal rights in regards to the law which I mostly believe we do. It's the social attitude which hasn't changed in some parts of england... Which is why I think pride is important. I haven't been to one in about 8 years but it was a laugh and very welcoming to everyone... Not just gay people go.

I think a lot of people arnt aware of just how much abuse LGBT people still get. I volunteered at an LGBT centre for 3 weeks about 6 years ago... And even in that time frame I heard some horrific stories from people wanting support.

Really thought people have moved on from their archaic ways of thinking but considering this thread it's clearly not the case. Hopefully one day people don't feel as though they need a pride day but as seen in this thread there is still quite a bit of animosity towards them.

Hi Chris. Many thanks for tolerating me. Can you let me know what I am meant to keep to myself. Is holding hands or having a quick peck on the lips with my partner too much for you to stomach. In that case I'll contact the gay council and spread the message that we need to stay behind closed doors. Thanks

P.s I missed the memo where being gay = messing around with underage kids. I think you also need to send the memo out to your straight community and religious institutions too.

Sincerely
A flamboyant screaming fabulous queen
