Hi Guys, just bought a new car 4 yrs old 67,000 miles on the clock.
Priced at £18,000 FSH everything i wanted. Got a decent deal with Part X included. Very happy with the car.

At the time of sale i asked "can you put it in for the next service?" they advise we don't do that but everything needed for the next 6 months will be done and you will have 6 month "Manufacture level warranty"

Fair enough i thought, on driving car home the AC doesn't work... Booked it back in with them, 100 mile round trip later and 4 days without car, the AC is fixed & they refilled fuel tank as good will. Great.

1030 miles after buying the car (yesterday AM 4 weeks after purchase) the "needs service" warning has come on. I spoke to the dealer they have basically said its your car you service it. (in a nicer way)

What would you guys do with this? I mean they are right it is my car, and i would pay... but after 1000 miles of ownership? It doesn't quite sit right with me.. but before i complain i wanted to check im not expecting to much..the dealer is a big main dealer.. i wont name... and dont want to go into what car & having to argue why i bought it!

So would you just suck it up and pay? Or argue it should be done prior to the sale? The point about them stating everything included for 6 months is not on any paper work.

A main dealer has quote £350 for the service.

What is the car and how come there was no information on when the service was due at the time? Did you not get a service book?

Yes there was a service book, it stated at 55,000 last year was the last service and a major service £550 i think was paid out.
Thats why i mentioned to the dealer can you throw in next service as i assumed it would be approaching... but wasn't 100% sure on the service schedule...

Was this sold by a main dealer?
What car is it?

Chances are you could take it to a specialist independant garage and have the service done for half of what a main dealer quotes you. Especially so if the last service was a "major" one.

Should have agreed at the point of sale to have the service carried out before collection.

They even advised they don't or won't do the next service, but you still purchased the car. Now the service indicator is on and you want them service it for nothing?!?..

This is the point of the thread ... Half of me thinks like you, but the other half thinks "they said everything needed in the next 6 months will be done"...

Pretty sure the "everything you need for the next 6 months" was just a fob-off. The car was clearly due for a service when you bought it.

Having said that, without pushing harder at the time I think it's pretty much a case of suck it up and get it done yourself. You could try and hold them to their word - might even be worth a phonecall to someone in charge there, but I think you'd be in for a struggle.

OK - the cash is not an issue and i don't mind getting it done myself i just thought in principal its wrong. Doesn't sit right with me you know? Guess next purchase ill just make sure everything is written down.

6 months is too vague a timescale. i mean 6 months driving to me is about 6-800 miles max where as my friend 6 months driving is about 20k miles.

if it were me then 6 months would have been fine with no service lights where as my friend would have been a week or so.

If what you said in your post is accurate, then them saying this part...

At the time of sale i asked "can you put it in for the next service?" they advise we don't do that but everything needed for the next 6 months will be done and you will have 6 month "Manufacture level warranty"

would suggest they wouldn't have put it in for a service anyway.

Did you not look at when the car would need its next service and determine based on how many miles you drive a month how quickly that would come around? I.e. if the next service was due in 2k miles, and you only drive 200 miles a month, then a service in 10 months you'd probably think reasonable. If you're doing 700 miles a week, then that service will come round very quickly.

As others have said, the "everything needed for the next 6 months" is a bit vague, and they were probably referring to the warranty. This is where questions should have been asked at the point of sale. "Everything needed for the next 6 months" - OK what does that include, if a service is needed in the next 6 months will you cover that, if an MOT is needed in the next 6 months, will you cover that.

Could you be any more vague in your posts?

Should have negotiated at the time of sale, the '6 months manufacturer level warranty' is complete BS unfortunately.

I could try to if you'd like? Or maybe in the OP I could state I wouldn't mention the name of the dealer or didn't really want to mention the manufacture of the car just wanted an answer on what other people would do in the same situation irrespective of the car type or garage.. oh wait a minute...

Anyway case closed.

Its booked in with Jag for next week.

Thanks for the replies

Unfortunately, even with them categorically saying they wouldn't service it for you, you bought the car knowing it needed a service soon. It is immaterial if they have made a throw away comment of "it has everything it needs for the next 6 months", you still *knew* that it needed a service. If you weren't happy with this, you really should raise it prior to the purchase of the car.

Your responsibility in this scenario

Probably for the best anyway as they wouldn't have been likely to put it into Jag for you. Consider whatever you negotiated off to be partly because it was shortly due and you wanted it to be done by the Manufacturer
