Anyone know about pre 1980's Scalextric cars?

Hi guys,

Was clearing out the future mother in laws loft last week when I stumbled across two old Scalextric cars which she kindly gave me as part payment with some other cool little items , both are in their original boxes with manuals and in great condition considering their age. There is a C/81 Cooper and a C/82 Lotus.

I've a quick look on the bay and although there are some on there going quite cheaply they're not in working order, without original box etc.

Was wondering if anyone knows their true value?

Value on stuff like that is very hit and miss - you'll find some stuff that certain people will pay a ton of money for but other stuff no one is interested in. Awhile back my mum found some of the original AFX stuff in storage in pristine working condition and original boxes, etc. and for some reason at the time was ridiculous demand for it - each item was going for like £200 a pop.

That brings back memories. Mid 70s, me as a little boy at a holiday camp. Butlins, probably. They had a huge Scalextric track, yards and yards and yards of it. I was in awe.

Unless they all had them, I've been to that one too.

They had one at Skegness - I'm sure it was 8 lanes. And it was free to use, and people had manners and let you had a go after they'd had one - they didn't hog it all day. It was awesome.
It was in the bit where they had model kits to make up, like dioramas of WW1 trenches and other fun stuff.

When I was a wee lad I used to go to a local track on Friday nights for the practice sessions. They had race nights on Tuesdays but I never had a car which met all the criteria. It was on top of a pub and once the older folks were done they'd go downstairs for a few beers and leave us to mess around, great fun. I think it's been shut down since.

I used to play with Parma slot cars which blew all their Ninco ones out the water. The Nincos were much nicer to look at and were much more detailed but the Parmas were just stupid fast, which is why they weren't allowed on race nights. I could never afford a Ninco :(

EDIT: Christ, that video makes it look about as exciting as watching paint dry!

Lotus owners club and Cooper owners club are worth Googling, anyone with the real thing won't think twice about £50 to £100 for each model as a desk top ornament as both real cars are very valuable and people love to have models of them. Good luck!

i remember that place, holiday to butlins was horrible, the track was the best bit

My uncle had the best setup in his loft in London back in the 80s (he had been into it previously but i was young) . He used to to clubs etc to race them. All sorts of cars. Brings back memories. Lighter fluid for grip on the tyres .

I used to love going up in to the attic
