Odd question I know, but I live about 200 yards from a fish and chip shop.

Since new owners have taken it over at the start of the year, the smell in my back garden has got worse. It's not a nice fish and chips smell, it's just a horrible deep fat smell that gets a bit nauseating. It's always at it's worst in the early evenings when they get busy, so I am finding it not very pleasant to sit outside during this nice weather.

I mentioned it to them but the owner Just shrugged his shoulders and said that's the smell you should expect from a chip shop. But it was never this bad when the previous owners had it.

I tried googling but I can't find out if there is any specific smells restrictions in take away places.

Contact your council? They probably don't do any maintenance to the extractor fan filters, so the exhaust coming out is old fat and all that other crap the collects in there.

I lived round the corner from a curry house that wreaked of old stale garlic and oil every Wednesday morning. They must have cleaned something out once a week, it was disgusting.

If it's really unbareable complain to your council environmental department, I'm sure there's probably some real guidelines on cooking stink in a residential area.

Especially do this if the foods crap or over priced too.

When the one next to us (60yrds away) changed hands the smell went down, they said it was a different oil being used then before.

im about 400 yards from my local chippy kebab shop and chinese. I cant describe the smell. its like all 3 trying to compete.

biggest issue we have is seagulls. how the hell they are protected ill never know

Most don't care. The council done the same to a neighbour whose house floods from a badly drainage system from a field any time it rains quite heavily. Fire brigade always comes up trying to pump out crazy gallons of water, for years now.

Sounds like some harsh blame on the council for someones house being flooded out every time it rains.

No blame on the person who built it there? The current owner for buying it? The flood plain for flooding?

If someone throws enough money at it you can have a dry house at the bottom of a lake but the councils money?

There is an ex-chippy now a fully fledged kebab/pizza shop near me and everytime I walk past it all I smell is a horrible greasy smell. It's not very appetising and doesn't make me want to go in for food.

I just don't know how dumps like this get any custom. Bah.
