How Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are hurting gamers

I'm so kicking myself!!

As someone else above says, I've just gotten in to PUBG and need an upgrade.

Was trying to decide between a 580 and a 1060 and procrastinating about it.

Hesitated on getting a deal on an Asus 1060 6gb for £218 as I thought I wanted the 580.

Now I can't justify getting either (annoyed at myself emoji)

Now I personally think that going with one specific brand just for one game is a tad silly but if PUBG is very important to you nvidia does deliver the best performance. Of course AMD might do driver improvements later on but my r9 290 couldnt even handle the game at 1920x1080 on low without weird frame drops and overall dissappointing fps. The rx 480 i had did a good deal better but still was forced to run on low @ 2560x1080 with random stutters. My current 1080ti spits out mostly around 70+ on high at 3440x1440 but more importantly the frame times are solid with no odd dips or stutter.

Nothing there, no point? I'm curious of those trying it at home what their daily meter readings are...

@Psycho Sonny What is your system spec?

I have 2 PC's one is a htpc running kabylake g4560 using onboard. I just bought a i5 7600k so I'm going to use this as a gaming rig now and take the gpu from my gaming machine.

My current gaming machine is a i5 2500k overclocked to 4.4ghz on stock volts. 16gb of 1600mhz ram. 500gb hybrid with a 30gb SSD. GTX 1050 2gb which is alright but it's struggling with PUBG.

Plan is to now either use that as a htpc or get rid of it.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I think the 1060 6gb is what I want too. I'm not going to pay miner prices though

All it requires is someone to create an ASIC board which works with these new cryptocurrencies and GPU prices will come crashing down.

Apparently something in the Ether block algorithm prevents ASIC's from working.....

Or as i admittedly understand it: ASIC -nope, 'reasons' :D

The profitability of mining will diminish no matter whether asics take over or not. It's how the system is designed to work, the more a coin gets mined then the harder the difficulty. It needs to work like this else the coin would become worthless. If the coin doesn't become harder to mine, it will simply be devalued due to the sheer volume in existence.

Yes indeed. But with all these bitcoin competitors emerging it will diminish the 'gold standard on steroids' effect of cryptocurrency which was the whole point in the first place.

I presume eventually there will only be a couple of them left standing and the rest will fade away. In the mean time expect lots of volatility.

I wasn't looking for a card 'just' for PUBG, it's just that PUBG was the catalyst for an upgrade.
I'd asked on the forum and been told with the rest of my spec, the two best options were the 1060 or 580, was just trying to decide which one.
Kept reading various reviews that all said they were about the same, so I couldn't make my mind up.....

Overall i would go with polaris if you could get one for the correct original price. As i already mentioned ive had the rx 480 myself and its an awesome card.

Excuse my being massively out of the loop (I only research hardware every few years when I build a new rig, otherwise I don't follow it), Polaris is an ATI card, right? So, the 580?

AMD bought ATI in 2005, its AMD now.

You really are out of the loop :D

I had been looking at PUBG and was wondering what this PUBG was all about. I watched Fatal1ty and GamerMuscle play it and was wondering, what on earth... It looks very dated, something from 2001/2?

Ha, oops!! I knew that too.... But you see my point :D

Large environment, last man standing shooter. You start with nothing, 'loot' for weapons/armour/attachments each game, can play solo or in teams of up to four.
It's become very popular very quickly, really good OcUK community on discord too.

Certainly worth a butchers if that's your sort of thing (thumbs up emoji)

Yes, and I was on the verge of buying a 970 yesterday when it became clear the price would get inflated. The seller actually agreed a price with someone and then another guy offers more and the seller then switched to that person. Out of order and something I personally wouldn't do. However, all within the rules so it is what it is.

I actually sold a BTC motherboard and CPU the other week for a price I was asking in 2014, I could have got a lot more but that's just how I personally like to do things.

Like I said, it'll all turn full circle soon.

I saw that, very strange. 970's were going sub £100 a few months ago as I managed to snag one with no interest from anyone else for £95. Hell even 290's were untouched. I grabbed both of mine for £80 each because no one else was interested.

There are even people jumping into the wanted section and jumping into threads there, it definitely needs moderating in my opinion.

Yeah, I saw it was quite a bit like real life military type sniping? Waiting for a while for a kill. Chess style for shooters. Lots of patience.

i won a game and where i only got 1 kill at the start. you can play aggressive or passive. it's not like your typical fps.

when i was at the end i just stayed hidden in some foliage, there was a guy on the roof of a building nearby. everyone was going towards him as he was firing shots all the time. nobody saw me. they all ended up in a firefight and i stayed there watching it. they were so caught up the zone closed on them and i was the only one in the new circle.

it involves a bit of luck too. it also might look like poo because it requires a mid-high end GPU to play on decent settings. fatality surprised he is still about. you want to watch some twitch streamers rather than youtube
