I recently bought a 3 year old Focus 1.0lt Ecoboost and notice that there is a slight whoosh noise when i change gear (foot down on clutch) in anything above 3rd gear. I can only hear this with the window open. I know these cars have a very small turbo but is this noise normal or should i take it back to Ford to look at?

Thanks.

Sounds like the diverter valve doing its job to me, not driven a 1.0T ecoboost, but pretty much every small turbo I've driven has sounded as you describe.

If it's quite loud check the hoses are on tight. Hoses coming off is a thing on these engines. Quite a few people had it on the Fiesta STs due to the clips being to loose from the factory :/

I'm not sure if it's the same with the Focus, but the Fiesta has slightly higher boost pressure in 3rd gear upwards. So if you put your foot down at low revs in 3rd and release around 2000-2500rpm, you get quite a loud chirp.

No chirp just a slight whoosh.

Anyone with a 1lt ecoboost, how many miles do you get out of a tank? I get about 380 miles which is mostly motorway and A roads. My previous 11 year old 1.4lt Astra SXi did 440 although had a slightly bigger tank.

I have the Ecoboost Fiesta and get around the same beerbaron and thats around average for the 36k I've done in it.

I get around 400 miles per week for 35/36 litres of fuel. So around. 50mpg typically. It's mostly motorway driving outside of peak times.

My mpg counter hasn't moved since i bought the car so no idea what its doing. There is an instant fuel gauge but don't know what that refers to.

Do you know when it was last reset? Obviously if it hasn't been reset since it rolled off the showroom then your usage in the space of a month or two might not make much difference.

Or its knackered.

Not a whole lot more than my tuned Fiesta ST got lol

If mine didn't spend the majority of it's life doing a 4.5 mile commute, it would easily do 48mpg or thereabouts (as it did when I tried on a long run)

Fortunately 44.5mpg is considerably more than the ~31mpg that my 2.0TFSI A3 managed consistently on the same commute
