Looking to buy a new phone for my wife, was considering the G5 Plus - but the lack of compass seems.. odd.

Does this cause a problem when navigating with Google Maps (in car and also when walking) ?

My phone's compass seems to perpetually drop out of calibration.
Once the phone has a GPS fix and you're moving, it quite quickly figures out which way you're heading, so you'll probably be fine. The time it'll fail is if you're stood still, turning on the spot trying to figure which way to go - in that case it's best to set off striding and see if it's happy or wants you to change direction :P

As a prolific user of Google Maps and Waze for walking, public transport, and driving instructions, this was a concern I held about the Moto G5 Plus too. I made the decision to purchase the phone, and do not have any regrets.

Even when following walking directions, I do not find the lack of magnetometer to be an issue, and turn by turn navigation works perfectly. The only downside is that the directional arrow displayed on the main map view does not necessarily represent the direction in which you are facing. On reflection, this really is a non-issue. My previous phone was equipped with a magnetometer, though this was often miss-calibrated and gave erroneous readings.

I find if you spin the phone on is axes it will quickly calibrate and start giving you an accurate heading. Maps seems to need calibrating each time its opened. Just have to not mind looking a bit of a madman whipping out your phone and trying to fly it like a toy plane!

The compass on my last phone stopped working. It was a mild annoyance but not a deal breaker.

None on the G4 I had. I found it annoying but not a deal breaker.

Would often end up going the wrong direction out of say a car park, before it corrected it self. Probably only a handful of times though,
