New to building need help! Around £1200 Ryzen build

Hey guys! I've been doing a bit of searching for a few weeks now and every time I get close to a complete build I'm either over budget or my brain melts making sure it's the best I can get for my money.

I'd really appreciate some help with a complete build (Tower, Monitor, OS etc). Although I do have a mouse (good start).

I have a budget of around £1200. I can go over a bit if it will help dramatically.

I'd prefer a 27" monitor. Not sure if it would be worth getting 4k ready now with this kinda budget instead of upgrading later. High refresh rate and FPS are ideal so maybe 24" would be better?

I'd like to try out a Ryzen build as I've read good things from you guys on here.

I'd like something VR capable (unless I need to increase my budget biggly (Trump quote)), with the plan to upgrade to something 4k worthy in the not so distant future.

So far the only games I know I wanna play are things like CSGO, Rocket League, and Battle Grounds. I'm sure this would expand with a new capable rig (I'm on a mac (yeah) right now so PC games are new to me.

Size, noise and heat don't really matter, and I don't mind cheaping out on the keyboard for now.

I'm after a sleek case like the NZXT H440.

Sorry if this is a bit of an essay but I could really use your guys help!

Thanks for your time :)

Hey!

I've never built but I'd love to take the time and learn to do it myself. If the budget is a bit tight for what I'm asking I can probably add another £100-200

Thanks

Hi,

I'd be aiming at partnering a 2560x1440 screen with a GTX 1070. However, that may not be possible for the budget at this point in time (Edit - turned out it is). You ought to have a more powerful PSU to cater for GPU upgrades.

There are a few ways to save money while still essentially getting the same. The NZXT Source 340 or 340 Elite or Phanteks Eclipse are very sleek and cost less. You can save about £20 on the RAM too. Windows 10 not sure why price is so high at OcUK. Ditto for Samsung 850 EVO 250GB. A £100 motherboard would be fine. Monitor look for Asus PB277Q 27" 2560x1440 75Hz, a little faster refresh rate and cheaper. Freesync unnecessary with an Nvidia card (you'd want Gsync monitor for that - expensive).

Then you could get a 550W PSU, and still have made some savings.

You'd probably then have just about enough for a GTX 1070.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,124.53
(includes shipping: £14.70)

Discount code for Zotac GTX 1070 AMP: Zot1070

Add an Asus PB277Q and Windows 10 for £362.87. OcUK sometimes do price-matching.

Total: £1487.40 with GTX 1070, better PSU.

If you'd prefer not to spend so much and start off with a GTX 1060, then look at this one:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £249.89
(includes shipping: £9.90)

Discount code for Zotac GTX 1060 6GB Mini: Zot1060

That's really helpful thank you so much Danny! I'll look into getting a price match/monitor OS elsewhere.

I take it there is a pretty significant difference between 1060/1070/1080(ti)..?

What kind of new parts would I need to go along with a 1080 if/when i upgrade in the future? I guess by the time I'm in the market for an upgrade there would be something new anyway but i'd be interested to know. I'm stuck deciding wether or not to save for longer to get something that's going to last me longer - if I'm going to need to change other parts along with the GPU.

Yes, look for game benchmarks in web articles or on youtube. Specifically 1440p benchmarks if that's the res of the monitor you're going to go with.

You're good with those parts for 1080 and 1080Ti (or any newer that come out that require the same power as those).

Danny's put together a good combo for your money - and as he mentioned the GTX 1070 compliments 1440p very well.

If you're happy to wait the only thing you may want to hang for is the Vega release - but no one is really sure how it's going to perform ir more importantly how it will affect prices.

Reality is - whenever you buy there will always be something better around the corner.

EDIT: And as above :)

Thanks again Danny! (called you Mobster earlier.. embarrassing) Super helpful again.

Cheers Plec, I'll keep that in mind as it might be a little bit till I've put the funds together. I think I might just have to take the plunge and get involved with building as it sounds like if I wait for Vega they'll be something else I could wait for too.

Thanks again guys, everyone on these forums is doing a great thing helping others. It's all so daunting at this point!

I saw that. No worries. :)

And you're welcome.

The Vega release Plec mentioned is estimated to start beginning of August, could be mid-August when cards actually start leaving retailers to buyers. If that's of any help with your decision.

Hey guys, me again!

I think i've finally fell down the slippery slope i've heard warnings about. Looks like i'm about to spend more money than I'd planned.

I've been looking into this build and was a bit weary of the 75hz refresh rate compared to the seemingly standard 144hz+ monitors. As this is my first PC in a while I doubt i'd appreciate the higher refresh rate (especially for the £300+ additional cost). Would you recommend a better refresh rate over size?

I've also been looking at the 1080 as I've seen one that comes in around £40 more that the 1070 suggested above. Is it worth it?

I've been looking at this gear. (I know this should probably come under the monitor/gpu section but since you guys have seen my potential setup already)

Is the £300-400 extra worth it for a better refresh rate/higher numbered GPU

Thanks Micky!

I guess the monitor specs speak for themselves.. I've heard the ASUS PG278QR performs nicely but i'd be spending double on a monitor! uh oh..

These three 1080s are also worth looking at. Normally more expensive than the MSI Armor (which is a solid choice regardless) but with the discounts the same, cheaper or slightly more, respectively.

For monitor the standard is still 60Hz. So due to budget a 75Hz would have been nice. But if you can afford a TN 120/144/165 then by all means. They are aimed at first person shooters more than anything. IPS monitors can have fast refresh rate too, but very expensive. And IPS 60Hz is for those who prefer image quality/colours to refresh rate/response time.

Since you like CS:GO, a faster refresh rate even if TN, would be a good shout.

Hey Danny! Thanks for the help. Maybe I should be sensible haha. I've seen a nice BenQ XL2730 27" 144hz for £470 elsewhere maybe that would be a good middle ground.

I think I'll sleep on it for now and keep researching but these graphics card options seem like a reasonable upgrade.

Cheers guys!

I'd like something VR capable

This means that you are looking at a Nvidia GTX 1070 as a minimum.

As for monitor manufacturer, from what I've read with Acer you have poor quality control and with Asus you have poor RMA. I don't know about AOC.
