Good moderation should barely be visible. That's certainly never been the case around here.

While I'd agree with that you do have to keep in mind that they're linked to a retail business.

IMO on a forum not linked to a retail business moderation ought to be mostly confined to removing/banning spammers/bots, removing anything that breaks UK law (piracy, racism, libel stuff that could get the forum owner in trouble) and stopping personal attacks between posters. Such a forum doesn't require as much moderation (I moderated one back in uni and barely had to do anything).

Obviously this place is linked to a retail business so there are rules about swearing/content of links, people arguing, religions being criticised (arguably some more than others) - I guess in some of these areas where moderator action is taken the issue falls into a bit of a grey area and people will observe what they perceive to be similar behaviour occurring on the forums and not resulting in moderator action - thus the various complaints in here as when more subjective decisions are taken you're gong to end up with inconsistencies and perceptions of unfairness.

I'm sure the mod team do try to be consistent and discuss stuff behind the scenes as some have mentioned in here but it is probably inevitable that more subjective stuff won't be consistent and thus people will feel that they've been unfairly treated, especially in cases where they've ended up with suspensions or warnings while believing they were following the rules. That is probably the tricky bit as when it happens too often people will feel a bit alienated and that isn't too good for the underlying business either - thus I guess why some of the moderation has changed a bit over the years and the feedback forum opened etc... you don't want a bunch of customers to disappear because some geek on a power trip* has brought out the 'ban hammer'.

edit - * I'm not saying the mods are all geeks on a power trip BTW, probably quite the opposite in some cases

It's definitely less fun than even two or three years ago. Some interesting/ intelligent / creative/ witheringly-snarky/ bat-poo-crazy posters have left (often banned, disappointingly) and not been replaced by anyone particularly entertaining.

But, also, the world has changed. **** is pretty serious, and seriously polarised. The forum seems to reflect that.

Too many are too thin-skinned though. Some of the post-deletions, presumably rooted in someone reporting them, are pretty mind-blowing.

Nah, the place is still funny. It is just that social media has become real life now and it has sadly infected everything. Everybody knows.

Also, Brexit, Trump and Maccy being an admin has really shown that anything is possible in these dystopian times :D What next? Magnolia as Don? Have you all lost your minds? :D :D
I'm also available for parties and weddings, certain celebrations, and bad moderating! Call for my CV today!

Thank you for your support, citizen!

All the mods are 4ft in height. This is one of the rules to becoming a mod. You have to be short and a keyboard warrior. :p
