Is Spending £650+ on a GPU really worth it?

is it really worth paying for a 1080ti or higher? Can you really see the difference above say a £450 1080?

What are say the positives in purchasing such expensive cards, can you really see it over 1080's?
 
Depends what you do. Take a car for example, if you just commute then you don't need a Ferrari, yet if you're track mad, you'd get great use from a Ferrari.

If you play the absolute newest games at highest settings, top end GPU are worth every penny.
 
Personally, ive always found middle to high end the best place to be. Best bang for buck card id say would be the 1070, not too expensive but yet will eat anything thrown at it. I personally just couldnt justify the 1080ti
 
depends on the monitor resolution that you have - if you are on 1080p there is no point at all in the 1080ti. If you are at 1440p it is more debatable, but at 4k a 1080ti certainly wins out
 
My buddy spent £800 on a Titan (mark 1) at launch (over four years ago), it's still worth £200-250 used and will trade blows with a new GPU costing around that.
 
If you can afford it then why the hell not.

I have a 1080ti @ 1080p 144hz.

Some people will argue that the ti is overkill at that resolution but I like to play my games maxed out, every slider at full and make full use of my monitor.

You might not need a ferrari but if you had the money why wouldn't you go for it anyway? Its not like you can take it with you.

Tbh I wouldn't mind 1080p now, esp as you can DSR that baby up and still have the silky refresh rate :cool:
 
Depends how much you use it it's like me I barely have time to play on my pc anymore due to working 50 hours a week and then my social life. So part of me regrets going to 4k and a 1080 Ti as I'd happily go back to 1440p and buy back my 980 Ti from my twin for £200

You also don't need a ferrari if your track mad. You could spend £4K on a old mini cooper S or a 3 litre Z4 for track use rather than £400K.


if you game at 1080P then the max you should be aiming for is a 1060 6GB.

If you game at QHD then get a 1070.

If gaming at 4K then you want a 1080 or 1080 ti.

I believe VR also need a decent GPU, no idea why though.


it also depends on the game tbh. i'm talking about the latest and greatest with the above. if all your doing is playing CS:GO then a 1050 (non TI) will do at most res's.
 
Depends on the res, I went from a 980ti to a 1080ti and yes it was worth the jump to get higher minimums @ 3440x1440 100hz.

yeah the prices are stupid atm for a 1070 so 1080 makes more sense but at their normal prices 1070 IMO is the one to go for then upgrade in 1-2 years when it struggles. always best to buy the cheapest you can get away with then upgrade faster than buy more expensive and upgrade later on. tech usually moves fast but it has stagnated the past few years.

Well I have 3 screens on my computer, they're all pretty basic acer screens with native resolutions of 1080p @ 60hz. So even if my gpu can handle more I'm sure sure if my screen will show it.

I use my computer a lot as I do 3D renders so I do want a good gpu, I also game.

I have an oculus rift (which I cannot yet use haha), so I want a good gpu to show its games off.

If 1080ti is more for 4K I probably wouldn't go for that because I cbb changing all my monitors?

do you game on all 3 screens at once? if so then it may be worth it otherwise get a 1080 as 1070's atm are inflated hugely
 
I sometimes game on all 3, but now I have a VR hopefully I will use that for those games. Some games I play on 2 screens.

So my best bet would be to get a 1070 if I can manage to get one for around £300 new? I could wait for the new AMD's to come out and see how prices go.


Would a 450w PSU be enough for a 1070 with a overclocked CPU? Or should I up it to a 650w?
 
i bought a 1080ti for 1440p g-sync 144hz gaming, and in all honesty i don't really game all that much.. but love having the latest hardware. My previous card was a GTX980, and that ran 95% of games out there perfectly, especially using gsync if i'd knock down the msaa down from the max, which you'd hardly notice. Just nice to have ! i like to upgrade to the latest every couple of yrs.
