Hi guys

I'm set as a named driver on my wife's policy.

In April 15 I managed to drive into the side of a bus.

On last years insurance we just paid the renewal but now I'm looking at new quotes and wondering how to enter details.

Since the claim was on her policy I figure I can't say she's had no claims, but then i have to say I've had an accident so feels like I'm getting double whammied.

Any advice how I should enter this?

I've always understood it that insurance history follows the person.

Therefore the accident was yours, she can happily say 'no claims', you can't.

That's what i'd be doing.

What happened to the NCB at renewal, presumably she kept it?

The claim follows both people when a named driver has an accident.

Might seem unfair but that is how it is. The question is always phrased as whether you have claimed or had an accident for that very reason.

The policyholder claimed and the named driver had the accident.

If you are still on the same policy together then only include it for one person and I doubt any insurance company can claim you didn't declare it. Phone them up and this is probably what you will get told to do.

Cheers guys, sounds like it's not the clearest as you all have s different interpretation so at least I don't feel stupid.

Not as much as I did driving into the bus anyway!

To explain how I managed it. I didn't see a give way sign at a blind corner with high buildings so as the bus came past the building into my eyeline I was already too far forward to stop in time.

On the plus sign the bus driver said I wasn't the first to hit him at that junction!

As a bus driver I would question as to why he wasn't more prepared for it if it has happened to him before, but that is by the by I guess.

I've always put the claim against the driver, so 6+ years ago the wife was involved in an accident and when I renewed when entering her details I put that she had an accident and a claim. Never put that I had made a claim?

Per the name "no claims discount" I've always believed the policy holder, who has made the claim, is the one stung for any incident any named driver on that policy has.

But, I have to admit, the last time I phoned to sort out my insurance they asked me separate questions whether I've made a claim in the last 5 years, and then whether I've been involved in an accident (my fault or not) in the last 5 years. Then when I added a named driver to the quote I was then asked the same again, if they had claimed or been in an accident... So, it's a good way to bump up the premium of all policies that you're paying for. I have a policy with the gf as a names driver, and she has one with me being a named driver - say she dings my car and I have to make a claim, then my NCD is nuked and I pay more, and then she also has to report her accident to her insurer and her policy also goes up... yay (not sure if that accident needs to be reported immediately, or just at renewal time tho)
