Mercedes E-Class Coupe or Audi S5?

I'm struggling to decide between these two options. The class & sophistication of the Mercedes or the fast Audi?

Is the Audi worth the extra monthly cost?

Mercedes E220d Coupe : £480 per month
Audi S5 : £544 per month

Your thoughts?

The E-Class Coupe for me is one the most stunning cars on the road right now. It really is stunning.

That said, S5 without question if it's up against the E220d.

Wouldn't the S5 equivalent be a E400? Is that much more expensive?

As above. The E coupe is a fantastic looking car. Very nice interior too.

However, it's a 4-pot diesel, so S5 every time out of those two!

You can get the E-class coupe E300 in budget (assuming you are looking at contract hire)

Works out to £17,219 over 3 years or £478/month. Would need to consider mileage excess though given it's a 5k limit.

I personally wouldn't want to spend £17k to borrow a car for 3 years but it's in the same ballpark as your figures.

Yea I always find it really hard to decide whether I want a 4 cylinder diesel E Class or a turbocharged 6 cylinder petrol car from the class below with 150bhp more.

It's such a tricky decision, isn't it?

Why don't you first decide what type of car you want? Because if fuel costs are not a concern why on earth would you want an E220? And if you'd find the ability of the E Class beneficial why would you tolerate the comparative thirst of an S5?

This is an absolute nonsense comparison.

The e class is the nicer car, as cars go. They are beautiful things. But this is a stupid comparison, the S5 and the E220d are very different machines with very different performance profiles.

What do you actually want from a car? If you just want a blingcoupe then why would you even consider the S5 over one of the small diesel models?

Also, if you are the type having to look at these on a monthly payment plan, and are budget conscious to be concerned about the price hikes of the premium e class models, then surely you'll not want to put up with the thirst of the S5 anyway.

Didn't you need the Golf estate for kids and dogs? Neither of those cars are really suitable for either....

FWIW I'd spend slightly less on Lego for the kid, sell the purple sofa and get the E400.

Brutal! Is it a nice sofa?

Regardless of how much disposable money you have, £780 per month for an E Class Coupe is outrageous money.

You can get far superior cars for that kind of outlay. My uncle pays less than that for his new BMW 740.

Odd comparison. Do you want a diesel with 200bhp or a petrol with 350bhp for a start!?

How many miles do you do a year?

These 2 cars aren't even in the same league.

One is an expensive rep mobile, the other is a performance car...

I got an Estate previously because I needed the space. Now my partner has a crossover I no longer need it - 95% of my driving is just me with my son or my bike.
Having the option of any car makes makes narrowing down the choice difficult - hence my post.

I just want a nice car - I don't need performance (S5) and I don't need economy (Diesel). Just these two cars both fit into my budget and are nice :)

I will take Simon's advice.

They are both expensive rep mobiles, the S5 isn't a 911. It's an Audi A5 with a powerful engine. Similarly powerful E Class Coupes are available.

It's a car from the class below the E class that partially makes up for it with a better engine.

Having the option of any car

If this is really true then get a better E Class instead. It's simply a better car than an A5, which is aimed at the C class coupe not the E class.

Though if it is just driveway bling you want, hence not being bothered about the engine, a 2.0T S Line A5 is considerably cheaper I would imagine and fundamentally the same thing anyway.
