So I have owned my Polo GTI (I say owned, I borrowed it for 2 years but stay with me here, it's going to be worth it.....perhaps) for just over a year and a massive 6500 miles. On that basis I thought I should share my deeply thought out, highly analytical and deeply incisive thoughts. However, before I do that, knowing the limited attention span we have here, some pictures.

So there you go, the same old pictures reimagined.....as they say these days.

For me it's been a cracking little car, leased for keeping miles off my R8 and using to go to and leave at stations, airports, town centres, local offices and generally go anywhere I want without a car in the world. For that it's been great and it does that job very well. It is quicker than most basic road warriors cars, it is more fun cross country than most road warriors cars and it goes unnoticed by people in most situations, other than the common comment of "nice Golf mate".

Frankly I took it because it seemed a cheap (circa 1200 down and then 24 months @ £163 with a 3.1p excess milage charge) and my father has one for pretty much the same reason (not the GTI) and raves about it and each time I went in it I felt it was much bigger, quieter than any pocket hatch has a right to be and is well screwed together. I have it for 2 years and I will hand it back and for me that was perfect. I just got some paperwork, signed it, sent it back and 4 weeks later it arrived. Didn't visit a dealer, just spoke to a chap I know and car turned up.

It is basic in terms of options so is manual and has AC but not climate and to me that matters not in the slightest. I like a cool car, so I tend to set the temp and head off, bit of tweaking here and there, but thats about it. No SAT Nav but I have Waze and TomTom so don't really miss it outside of the integration. Outside of that I'd probably add active dampers and DSG but nothing more. Good little hifi, good phone integration and good all round. I have not measure fuel consumption at all, but I would estimate around 35-40mpg would be the norm, but I tend to drive it like I stole it everywhere.

Only issue has been birds in the trees dumping curry on the bonnet and that will need detailing out before it goes back and when the car arrived the heater knob was not connected! Back to VW to have that done and then 500 surveys afterwards 300 calls to see if I was happy with the surveys. So in summary this:

Good
- Front end turn in, goes where you point it and grips like dump on a blanket
- Engine, pulls really well for a 1.8 turbo and feel a lot quicker than I expected it would
- Size and ability to carry 4 in comfort, better than my RS4 ever did for example
- GREAT steering wheel, just feels right and the right size
- Good tech (within reason) and makes phone connecting and playing music easy
- Looks relatively good and gets lots of positive comments
- Discreet and just another car, but shows every Dave the rep a clean pair of heels, I like that
- Makes me smile when I push on, goes well and feels very planter

Bad
- Zero steering feel, like most modern cars. Great grip and turn in, but numb
- At very slow speeds on low/part throttle it is jerky, seems bad fuelling
- Far too stiff. Doesn't move around, stays planted but GOD you bump up and down
- Engine is silent, embarrassed to admit I did a grand dad once. On limiter, didn't know....oops
- Paintwork like our old Mk5 GTI far too soft, bird poo killed it badly
- Seats too high
- Brakes can get a bit hot, especially when really going for it

So i'd have another in a heartbeat. It is far from the best at going and stopping but as an all round and most of all cheap nippy run about that can make you smile on the right road and make you forget the miles on a long road (a very rare combo in such cars) it is ace. I recommend it to the house...though it is too much car for anyone who can't do the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs.

Manual air con lol :p

More seriously, a few years ago this was on the shortlist, but the Fiesta ST (what i went for in the end) was simply more fun to drive. An ST-3 also could be had cheaper and had a ton more spec. VW seemed to be very stingy with the standard spec on these to be honest.

and like all VW's, the exterior (and interior to some extent) styling is incredibly dull.

The Fiesta is more fun, wouldn't be any quicker in real terms on road and the VW feels much more solid and much quieter on longer runs. But if it had been a Fiesta ST for 140 quid a month I would have probably taken one of those instead. It was just a cheap lease for a good little car that ticked the boxes. If I wanted ultimate hot hatch I would have bought one. If I wanted fastest I would have bought it. I wanted cheap and good all around and that's what I got really. Also a few years ago was not this Polo, it was the last one, this one is better and quicker.

My neighbours wife has one in white, 64 reg. it's a really nice little (quite big) car. I'm a bit of a VW fan so I've always had a soft spot.

We own a 2014 VW Amarok Highline BMT 180 to transport the dogs about, for a 'commercial' vehicle it's a lovely drive!

Proof is in the pudding as they say, will you get another?

I only look 49

I don't think so no. I need something bigger that I can tow with I think. Might get one of them VW's that isn't the Tourag but I forget the name but dad driving daughter to school advert car.

Tiguan. Not sure what the towing capacity is on that, I'm thinking of getting a 2015+ Touareg 3.0 R Line. (Or an X5!)

I checked and have forgotten, but think it was 2200kgs which is plenty, well on the R one I was considering.

Though I think I am more likely to get another 5 series as they are so good and I need to keep Fox happy.

I was very impressed with the Amarok I drove, leagues ahead of the Navara, Ranger, Warrior and Hilux, the only one of the type I could live with every day.

I find these newer Polo's actually quite nice to drive. Had a few of the little 1.2l versions at courtesy cars in the past.

Any idea how the GTI would compare to the BlueGT? Quite like the idea of the BlueGT.....A good amount of power but ACT for a nice easy MPG bonus when cruising

Have you considered a 530d M Sport? I heard they are good.

The McLaren sales manager drives the new 520D and his words match my words about the 5 series. "It's probably the best car in the world if you're honest and look at what it offers. It is out of this world good".

Sums up my view of the 5 series, always said so too.

Witchcraft. He has a 4cylinder executive saloon so obviously has no idea about cars

Today I arranged for the Polo to be collected on July 17th after 2 years in my care. It is of course a highly emotional thing, not least as the bloody thing needs a service (and front tyres!) and that's nearly 200 quid I have to cough up a couple of weeks before it goes back to Mr Lease!

I realise how very few members on here could be a member of this club, you simply aren't at 'that' level and even Crinkle with all his Bitcoins and Iceman, even stateside, simply can't elevate their funding to the levels needed. Because of this I felt it was my job to share the journey with you lot, you know, the poor, of what being one of the Illuminati is like, if only from afar. There is something really special about driving into a service station and people, even unwashed ones, running over to take a look or to be in the cars presence. Audi drivers who were just about to shout their famous line "my watch costs more than your house" simply sulk away and drive off. They know when they are owned.

So with a sad heart I will bid it farewell, the most epic car I or anyone on this forum has/will ever own. It's great to be me and to be able to own (look....leasing is owning OK!!!) such a tool I am, I mean like this. I hope me sharing this journey with you is fully appreciated and I hope my just giving page will get the appropriate level of donations when I work out what the internet is.

God speed my secret passion, bon voy arge. :(

Great cars, but need smaller wheels. Trading one myself this week/month. I'm probably going to elevate myself far above all others to a Vitara S 1.4 Turbo. I just hope the world is ready for me.
