Hot hatch recommendations - £20k

Your budget was £20k?

Fox thought it was too high for a Focus. I think it's too high for a 1series when compared to what you wanted from a car.

I bought my car as I had a kid and needed another seat. I didn't want a fertility wagon and whilst it's not my first choice at all it is a jack of all trades and is the only car that replicates the nature of an S2000.

My budget was 20k, but that doesn't mean I've spent 20k does it? I think 20k is too much to spend on an E93 3 series

What should I have bought instead?

I must have missed the bit where you said what you did spend. Seems you saw sense and didn't put £20k into a 1 series then ?

Fwiw I would have got a 235i if I was in your position. Much better looking for a start

I assume you aren't comparing interiors in this comparison ?

Well if you want my opinion, the e92 interior is terrible compared to the Vantage, and surprisingly downmarket to even the e46 M3.

We have a LCI 1 series which has a nice interior, pro nav (and upgraded idrive) which is a world away from the e92 offering. It's quite refreshing.

The 235i is more expensive than the 135i. You lose a middle rear seat, and a proper load area too.

Can you even get a 235i for £20k?

Never bought a car by committee so must be wrong. I said it looked nicer and not like a shoe.

I'm sorry but the leather in the 1 series is no where near as nice as an E92. Red vs red. One is proper naps leather, the other is that fake leather with texture you find on a holiday inn sofa

Obviously I don't buy cars on interior anyway so it's rather mute for me

Surely if I put 15k or 20k in it makes little difference as it's a shoe?

Also, how does a 2 series even get close to the requirement of having 5 (or 4) doors?

Again, not sure where you're going with this. We're trying to be helpful, and you're trying to pimp old M3s to a guy who wants a newish 5 door hatch.
I just threw something else into the mix for someone asking for what car he should buy for £20k. I'm not sure why the Pitch forks are out.

WTF Simon.
Post 12 my friend.

There are about 10 135i and 8 235i in my work car park. Hence the comment about a 2 looks better. Yes it's stupid for the op but I didn't really like the abuse I got for suggesting something a bit curveball.

Because you're berating his decision, which to be fair, happens to be the most appropriate decision given his opening criteria.

It's like me questioning why you didn't buy a V8 Vantage instead of your e92 M3.

Hardly berate his. Mor the fact I got berated for a small hint of an alternative suggestion.

I looked very serious at them as they seems a good buy, the v12s blew me away, the v8 was really nice especially the passenger ride and a lot of the AM test drivers said they are a good purchase but I didn't get one Because I need more than 2 seats. But that was deffo in the list :(. In fact I went under budget to get the M3 as it just seemed to make sense as a daily driver without going to the extreme of a Citroen Picasso 'because I need to fit a car seat in '

I only recommended a 5 dr as it seemed to fit what he was after. I didn't realise he always drove 5 people about and his passengers had no knees.

Nor did I know every personal circumstance. But 5 dr hot hatch is a bit odd, if you need ease of access you need a bigger car...

The 2 does look much, much better, but it probably would not be as practical and he did say hot hatch.
