Just going out of a village on a bend, in a 30 zone just before a 40 into the countryside. 3 codgers on the bend, flourescent jackets, two sat down in deck chairs, another with a cylindrical looking gun which he raised and pointed towards my car. Speed cameras?

I went back through the village on my way back but they weren't there, and then I noticed community speedwatch placquards attached to lamposts throughout the village.

Never seen it before, but just googled and seems like a legitimate thing? Can 'help out' and report and speeders to the police.

Code:
Community Speed Watch aims to make motorists aware that the community will not tolerate speeding. It is about taking positive action, with local people working together to improve the safety and quality of life for everyone in the area.

Volunteers set up the watch in a designated spot, using measuring equipment to record the speed of passing vehicles. Details are noted of any vehicles found to be speeding.

Working with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, a letter is then sent to motorists about their speeding. If the same driver is identified as speeding in the area a number of times then officers will make contact with the driver and action may be taken.

They do this in Suffolk near the parents in law as well. It's mostly just being visible to show the speeds are being monitored rather than you being ticketed. If a lot of speeding is registered then likely police will man it another day or they get to pressure the council to install a fixed camera.

ok, if they were recording it it'd take years to go through the list of people clocked cos no one goes 30mph at that bend, it's literally a few feet from a 40 and a massive long straight into the countryside.

They are out in force doing this in a village I pass through daily at the moment. Daft thing is though they are manning their "fight" on a short stretch of road that already has three static gatsos, not quite certain what they expect to achieve?

Community speed watch, they have it in Staffordshire. Usually old biddies given a speed recording device and they make notes of speeders and hand them to the police.

Have the same here too, villages and small towns sign up and locals get given kits during summer when it isn't raining and no kids walking to school to monitor roads with very little in terms of accidents but a high proportion of "speeders" because roads which used to be 60mph reduced to 40mph, 40mph were reduced to 30mph etc.

Send out naughty letters, if you get a few they pass your details on to the police to knock on your door with a NIP.

They can't actually do anything. BUT they keep a record of the people speeding and it might result in a camera being installed (if it looks profitable I guess, who knows if they fudged the figures though). Which is what has happened in a couple of villages near me.

None of them seem to be accident hot spots though, so I don't see the point. 100 yards from one of them is a cross roads which gets 2-3 accidents a year. They could have spent the money making that safer instead, maybe a roundabout.

Apparently not :/

You should see their faces when you floor it right after passing by their speed detector though. The one with the moustache was not happy :D

I may or may not keep the car in 2nd for exactly this purpose every time I pass one :)

I have done this but just dropped the clutch and redline the car. They all turn around with the speed gun expecting to see somebody doing 100mph but its just a car doddering along doing 25mph :D Have also seen a guy with Anti-Lag installed on his supra go past them, it sounds ridiculous and they look :o!

May just be the child killer within but I'd more than likely drop 2 gears as soon as I saw them.

Could do with these down my street - its a 20mph access only road that everyone uses as a cut through at 30-50mph.

There have been 2 crashes into parked cars this month alone.

How does one crash into a parked car haha. Had somebody do this back where I used to work, his excuse was "well the car wasn't there yesterday" :o
