Sale of petrol and diesel cars to be banned by 2040

I read the news this morning as well. No thoughts?

I think its a good idea but what happens to anyone that buys a diesel/petrol car in 2039 they will be forced to keep it for a long time as it will be worthless.

Im going to run my Mondeo TDI for as long as i can, i cant see anything electric tempting me for a long time they just dont work for me.

I see no issue with this. 2040 is 23 years away. With the rate of progress of electric cars I can't see anyone buying new ICE cars long before then.

It's about 22 years away. It's not like they won't have had plenty of warning.

It will have to be phased just to replace all the infrastructure needed to 'fuel' electric, or other alternative fuelled cars. If no one has been buying electric cars, garages etc won't want to implement infrastructure. Which means consumers will need to be enticed into buying electric vehicles in the 2020s and 2030s, so that the infrastructure is there, ready in 2040. I wonder if we'll drag our heels and slow it all down? Petrol stations would have to be everywhere for the next 20 years at least anyway, if you think how frequently you see Y-reg and older cars on the roads, not to mention classic cars etc.

I doubt however this will be forced upon us if the uptake of electric cars is still low (say, 35%) by 2035 - it would wreck havoc with our economy if suddenly we were forced to buy an electric vehicle when we want a new car (which seems to be quite frequent, every three years what with finance, leasing etc) we couldn't travel how we wanted to!

"New tax on diesel drivers from 2020" is a little more worrying - that's 2 1/2 years away. Would be nice to know what they're intending to do so that I can make a decision over what to buy for the next family car. The new Q7 for instance is not available with a petrol.

I would imagine it's for older diesel cars, ie up to euro 4 . Not sure

It is its for the most polluting not all diesels.

Electric has a long way to go before i will touch one. I would want around 600 miles on a charge and that includes with the heater and gadgets on.

Also doesn't bode well for electric prices. Im going to dig my heals in and stick with my diesel for as long as i can.

It's also worth mentioning we have a bit of s problem with building power stations- no doubt we'll 'need more' if everyone is charging their cars up over night, and that could well take 20 years to be tendered, contracted, planned, approved, built and switched on.

Well spotted. To be ready for 100% electric vehicles in 2040, we needed to start building the infrastructure years ago.

One of the things they will do is to encourage people to charge at low demand times im guessing by different prices at different times of day maybe even fully live pricing.

What about people like many of my friends that drive say a Mk1 Escort or Cortina. All stuck in museums to never be used again.

How good are batteries in cars i know my phone loses a good chunk of its capacity over say a year or two, same with cars? So that brand new 300 mile car when sold second hand will do 100 miles and thats in summer with no electrical gadgets on.

Its not the cars that are the problem, its the supporting infrastructure. Heard Quentin Wilson on the radio this morning saying similar and talking of several trillions of pounds investment required to make this work.

Plus by that point in time Hydrogen infrastructure will be better placed so we could have two options.

I'm hoping hydrogen can be made viable. Needs to be cheap enough to make in large amounts.

Hmm... electric cars still have some way to go before they could easily replace petrol and diesel cars. Plus they will never sound as good.

Perhaps in the near future I should buy a big V8 and keep it hidden underground ala Demolition Man.

What seems to be your boggle?

It still boggles the mind that the powers that be assume electric cars are cleaner. Sure, they are cleaner at the point of application, but total ecological cost, from conception, through build, into maintenance, even ignoring the fact that most of our electricity comes from fossil fuels...

We're not ready, not by a long shot.

Why will it be worthless? Are they stopping selling petrol or diesel in 2040 as well?

Night time electricity is 'offpeak' and is cheaper, yes but if literally the whole country is charging up their cars at night, just like our phones, I wouldn't be surprised if night time demand outweighed daytime electricity demand, and it isn't going to be 'off peak anymore! There might need to be some control in place where different counties get 4h to charge up, staggered across the night like all the counties starting with the letters a-e start at 9pm, f-j starts at 10pm...
