Talk to me about 640d Gran Coupe please

I've been debating about turning to the dark side and trading in my x351 XJ. The 640d Gran Coupe has caught my eye as I think they look fantastic. I'll be looking at 2015 cars as I think they get the Euro6 engines and I'm test driving an M sport with M sport plus.

Not knowing anything about BMWs as I've never been interested about them before, are there any must have options that I should be looking for? There seems to be a lot of conflicting information on what is and what's not standard equipment.

Thanks

Was in exactly the same position as you and spent months considering it. Eventually bought one in May and absolutely love it. It feels like a really special car to drive and puts a smile on my face every time I get in it. Fuel economy is incredible as well. On my 40 mile commute I've had 62mpg from it (although my r-foot normally puts it some way south of that :D).

All the talk of 'must haves' is interesting and Fox is right in terms of the outstanding baseline spec' but if you are looking at owning and reselling then the options will be an important consideration. My car was an out-and-out luxury purchase so I was fairly picky about the extras that I wanted but this is what I would say about some of them:

  • M Sport plus pack is a great addition. The HUD is fantastic and the upgraded sound system is certainly worth having
  • I went for comfort seats. Much nicer leather (though softer) and you get all the adjustments that you would be used to from the Jag
  • Reversing camera is good but I tend to use the surround view more; big car with poor visibility
  • Sunroof: Would hate to be without this. It really lightens the space up (and I've got ivory leather) and makes the car feel totally different from the demo' without a sunroof that I had
  • Adaptive LED headlights: Not something that I saw as a 'must have' but I love them. Great technology
  • Sun protection glass: All my recent cars have had this and i wouldn't be without it. Keeps the passenger cabin private and gives the car a more exclusive look (IMO)
  • Soft-close doors: A costly option but nice to have. TBH I'm surprised that BMW don't have this as a standard feature on a car at this level
  • Comfort access: As for the soft-close doors

Options that I don't have but would like:

  • Adaptive drive: Stupidly expensive but it irritates me that a car at this level only has basic cruise control
  • VDC: They seem to have it on most of the AUCs now and I would like to have the option of a comfort+ on occasions
Let me know if you have any questions.

Yeah, if I had it I think I would be there too. The ride is great without it, I just think that it would be a worthwhile upgrade.

It's interesting to see that most of the M+ AUCs are now coming with it.

Yup. I ended up going gc over the coupe because the options on used were so much better, really don't know why the coupe tends to be so poorly specced.

To add to that, screen isn't really needed, not had any issues with mine clearing swiftly. It has a quick clear option.

To be fair, until you've had a JLR or Ford with heated front windscreen, you don't realise just how crap even quick clear screens are in comparison. The Disco will remove thick snow in around 60 seconds without issue, but I normally use the app for the BMW

You clearly don't understand what a quality feel is, Jag do (or did until the X260) it well, BMW struggle. The materials quality in the BMW, especially as standard is just laughable compared to the PL or Portfolio Jags.
What the actual LOL? I, and most others who have eventually got around to driving an XF or even XE, cannot describe with enough words how woeful, creaky and poor the interiors are. JLR got it massively wrong and 2-4 year old cars are started to show massive wear already.

That's where the JLR app wins I guess. Remote start on automatic models :p

Thats not fair :(

The app is such a missed opportunity. Remote start would make it stunning - as would being to update vehicle information (Range, fuel level, etc) without needing to plug in via USB )

if you choose a diesel, watch out for excessive oil consumption every 500 miles

If you look in the FAQ for the app' BMW do say that remote start might be added to a future update.

How?

It simply turns the blower on at the last setting and can only blow ambient air! It won't start to warm anything.

Exactly, ambient air inside a car is warmer than that outside. I've never failed to get in to the BMW with a melted screen if I remember to turn on the ventilation prior to my morning shower :D

The connected drive app lets you see range and fuel level?
