I've been debating about turning to the dark side and trading in my x351 XJ. The 640d Gran Coupe has caught my eye as I think they look fantastic. I'll be looking at 2015 cars as I think they get the Euro6 engines and I'm test driving an M sport with M sport plus.
Not knowing anything about BMWs as I've never been interested about them before, are there any must have options that I should be looking for? There seems to be a lot of conflicting information on what is and what's not standard equipment.
Thanks
Was in exactly the same position as you and spent months considering it. Eventually bought one in May and absolutely love it. It feels like a really special car to drive and puts a smile on my face every time I get in it. Fuel economy is incredible as well. On my 40 mile commute I've had 62mpg from it (although my r-foot normally puts it some way south of that

All the talk of 'must haves' is interesting and Fox is right in terms of the outstanding baseline spec' but if you are looking at owning and reselling then the options will be an important consideration. My car was an out-and-out luxury purchase so I was fairly picky about the extras that I wanted but this is what I would say about some of them:
- M Sport plus pack is a great addition. The HUD is fantastic and the upgraded sound system is certainly worth having
- I went for comfort seats. Much nicer leather (though softer) and you get all the adjustments that you would be used to from the Jag
- Reversing camera is good but I tend to use the surround view more; big car with poor visibility
- Sunroof: Would hate to be without this. It really lightens the space up (and I've got ivory leather) and makes the car feel totally different from the demo' without a sunroof that I had
- Adaptive LED headlights: Not something that I saw as a 'must have' but I love them. Great technology
- Sun protection glass: All my recent cars have had this and i wouldn't be without it. Keeps the passenger cabin private and gives the car a more exclusive look (IMO)
- Soft-close doors: A costly option but nice to have. TBH I'm surprised that BMW don't have this as a standard feature on a car at this level
- Comfort access: As for the soft-close doors
Options that I don't have but would like:
- Adaptive drive: Stupidly expensive but it irritates me that a car at this level only has basic cruise control
- VDC: They seem to have it on most of the AUCs now and I would like to have the option of a comfort+ on occasions
