How long should I wait to upgrade?

ok so I have a dead gpu and using my old 2gb 560 (I'm surviving).

So I need a new gpu, may go for a 1070 or 1080ti not decided whether to go 4K yet or not.


So my question is when should I buy my gpu, should I wait for vega, or wait for Volta? Or just wait for the miners crash?

I'm really thinking about getting a vega, but then I'm thinking if Volta is released it will probably be better than vega.

I'm in exactly the same situation. I'm using an old GTX 285. I'm thinking I'll wait for the miners crash & hopefully a miracle will happen & volta will release this year. If I can't afford the volta at least it may bring 1070/1080 prices down

At the moment only buy a GPU if you really really have to. Otherwise wait out the miner craze, see what Vega does/doesn't bring, or hold on for Volta.

Other option is pick up a better 2nd hard card to tide you over.

End of the day only you can decide how long your willing to wait, Vega hopefully at least will be soon. Mining i dont expect ot crash for at least a few months but could also be next year before it does.

The only criteria you should go by is, 'Are there any games coming out that I want, that my current GPU can't run at the settings I want?'

I could upgrade to a 1080Ti tomorrow, if I wanted too, but there is simply nothing out now or due in the next 6mths that I'm interested in that my 970's can't handle, so I'm waiting for Volta.

In fact I'm most likely to upgrade to a 6c 12t Coffeelake CPU in a few months, which will be a much better CPU for a nice new 2080 Volta (or whatever it's called) than a 4690K

Upgrading just for the sake of it is a pointless waste of money.

While I can appreciate this argument, it's an endless loop. Volta comes out, maybe you wait a few months for the prices to drop. Then there's the refresh coming out 6 months after that, should you wait for that? If you do, there's a die shrink coming out next year, etc.

Its a tough one, wait until Vega is revealed in a few days then make a decision when you know whats on the table. It all depends on what you are willing to pay and how long you want to wait....

Pascal has been out for over a year now so thats why I think its a bad buy, almost at the end of its life. Plus it was only a shrunk maxwell, Volta will be the next real architecture

Well worth waiting for imo. Vega will also likely push down Pascal prices quite a bit.

It's a bit different this time around. Vega is literally around the corner, and all other GPU's are massively overpriced at the moment due to mining, additionally Pascal is nearing EOL where they'll either be sold much cheaper or Volta will replace them at the same price point.

Go for the 1080 ti. If I didn't play DotA 2 & the like 99% of the time (and only at 1080p-ish) I'd get that. You'll be able to squeeze years out of it easily.

A 1080 will be a MASSIVE jump over what you have so just go ahead and upgrade. You are managing with what you have so getting a 1080 or the next model wont even matter considering the huge jump in performance.

As far as upgrading goes, upgrade when you need to and dont worry about whats coming up or you will never do it as there is always something around the corner.

Yep wait another week, might be possible to survive with a lowly 1030 or 1050ti until volta next year if needed, save in mean time for thr card and new monitor

Different scenario from normal though because of inflated goldrush prices. Ordinarily cards that were released a year ago come down in price, not go up (and definitely not in the second hand market). You'd expect at some point the mining bubble on current hardware to burst (due to increasing complexity and/or better hardware coming out) and then people need to dump their hardware so the market for certain cards could change from a famine to a glut.

The 'something new is just round the corner' argument will always be there but temporary price spikes are something I would plan around.
