So im building a new rig for the living room tv to replace a ps4 so i can simply play better games. Looking for the best bang for buck. Keeping in mind the tv i belive can only achive 60hz but it is 4k 55"

I dont really have a budget just want to game on high/very high settings in current tittles. The card is going into quite a small case so dont want a furnace card.

Upto £800 is what im will pay but if the sweet bang for buck is half that i dont need the "greatest card" but out of touch on the latest cards and not sure of performance differences between the 1060/70/80/ti etc or is a 980ti better bang than a 1080 etc?

Opinions very welcome, rest of system will be a i7 of some kind and 32gb ram as will be used for some video editing too. As well as a media center.

GTA5, cod, fsx, arma etc will all be played too.

I've been thinking the same. The issue at the moment is mining and the lack of any AMD competition.

The 1070 is not that much cheaper than a 1080 which makes the 1080 look like value... when in actually fact it's still a £500+ GPU.

What I will say however is that the 1060's haven't really increased in price since the mining crave took over.

So I would say at current prices a 1060 or maybe a 580 if you can find a good price. (Scrap the 580... just had a look at prices! Once this mining craze dies down maybe)

Second hand market will be where the value is at, but are you comfortable with a second hand card?

4k screen tho makes it very tricky.

What ever you do, wait for Vega to launch first and see if it disrupts the market.

for 4k the best option is the 1080ti - with the way prices are all over the place, some 1080's are nearly up to ti prices so you may as well just bite the bullet - hunt around and they can be had for under £600 though, so no need to spend £800 on what is the best card currently available

a 980ti is around the same performance as a 1070 but a lot cheaper, so if you don't feel like the 1080ti then the next best bang for buck is the 980ti

Using a 1080Ti for 1440p/60 as I like to have the graphics dialed upto 11. At the moment the 1080Ti is your only option unless you want to wait for Vega (which will take time for game engines to make use of) or stretch that bit further for a Titan Xp.

If you don't mind dropping the graphics down a couple of notches (why would you want to on such a large TV) then you could save a little and go for a 1080. Avoid the 1070 / 980Ti for 4k though.

Consider a Ryzen 1700 and Oculus Rift (while its on sale).

The GTX1060 prices are also going to go up according to Gibbo and OcUK are doing a special rebate deal, but I looked at some of the their competitors - GTX1060 3GB cards are going for well over £200+ it seems, and OcUK is cheaper.

Apparently GDDR5X is not so hot for mining certain cryptocurrencies,so prices have not been affected as much with the GTX1080,GTX1080TI and Titan Xp.

If the case is really small you probably need a blower card, as most of the partner cards put heat into the case and require the case to exhaust that excess heat.

Though blower cards tend to be louder, so you need to do your homework on any particular card before you buy. :)

Cheers guys, yes it will be a small case so a blower may well be a good idea, noise is not a problem as the tv is wall mounted and the actual "pc" will be in the other room behind the wall.

I did look at the thread ripper but it seems single core performance (lets face it still important in gaming) the i7 still wins. When video editing im not worried about an extra couple of mins as its only a hobby not my job or anything.

Im thinking a 1080ti is the way to go due to the 4k screen but just trying to convince myself that i need to spend this much. I could alway game at 1080 but would feel its a waste as a 4k screen. Although tbh i am not blown away with 4k when watching films yes its better but you soon forget when you get immersed in the film its self. Maybe i will try bag a bargain with a second hand 1080ti

he says he plays GTA so it has to be a 1080ti.

my mate has a 4k tv and he struggles to hit 60fps constant on it playing PUBG with even lowering settings. he also bought some super dooper fancy OC'ed version which is £100+ more expensive than a normal 1080ti

Wrong time to buy a GPU, with AMD's cards and a 1070's shooting up in price due to miners, if possible wait until AMD bring Vega out, at the very least is could have a knock on effect on NVIDIA's 1080 and 1080ti prices.

right now the best value GPU's in terms of price per performance (imo) are the 1050ti and the 1080. I also game on my living room TV, though only 60hz 1080p, I can't recommend researching the cards acoustics enough, I have a noisy little sod in my living room PC, when using my PC for films the noise of my GPU is still audible despite me lowering the fans to its lowest speed, drives me, and the Mrs, mad!

If you can wait, hang on for real world reviews of Vega, if you can't wait and don't want to shell out for a 1080ti (wouldn't blame you, stupid pricing) grab a quite 1080

1050 is £110-£150 in it's 2 guises ti and non ti

1060 was £160-£210 in it's 2 guises

1070 should therefore be around £300-£350

best bang for buck atm is the lower end 1050ti or 1050

Ow I missed the small case bit, so yeah a blower 1080ti, but it'll be noisey, has to be a ti really as it's 4k, but yeah wait a bit for vega to see performance and what it does to prices

Pretty terrible place to be when buying a new graphics card.

My 970 cost £250 in September 2014, nearly 3 years ago. The 1060 costs the same and is barely any faster.

There are a few deals to be had on the MM. I missed out with my low bid on a used MSI non ref 1080 for £325 the other day. Not a bad upgrade when you can sell a 970 for £150.
