1 dead, 7 injured after ride malfunctions at Ohio State Fair

Funny place America.

This story barely features on any of the major US newspapers' websites. Contrasts with the Smiler reaction over here.

When you think of the size of America, it makes more sense that it isn't. I imagine it will be all over Ohio NEWS media.

Not sure I'd agree. Smiler absolutely dominated news here for about a week. This Ohio incident has barely registered. American's just don't seem to give a ****.

Realise there's perhaps a different expectation of safety on a travelling fair compared with Alton Towers, but it was a similarly shocking incident.

Also, US news not very sympathetic to victims' families: they show the whole of the footage with few worries.

Perhaps it's all a dehumanisation thing: it's not 'really' people - just entertainment and, as such, is pretty transitory.

I agree, but if it was six flags, Disney etc you can bet it'd be all over the NEWS.

Travelling 'fun fair' accidents aren't that uncommon in the UK either. It happened in Edinburgh not long ago, thankfully nobody died. Wouldn't get me on any of them anymore.

And this is why you should never use rides at travelling theme parks. Rickity old rides that are flat packed every week and hauled to another big field in another town are disaster waiting to happen.

I am a huge theme park nut, as is the family.

Merlin annual pass holders when we were in the UK and we did 5 weeks in Orlando in May/June.

We love it.

Travelling theme parks though I never ever risk :

-These rides are pulled down and constructed god know how many times a year.
-Usually run and maintained by people who I wouldn't trust to walk my dog.

They often look like characters from a hills have eyes kind of movie.

Perhaps you should seek help for your delusions.

The reason I don't goto theme parks anymore

You not going anymore means that the media has won. Don't be a conformist to the media.

Better stay away from cars and planes too.

This.

You are more likely to die on your way to the fairground / themepark than dying on a ride there.

Same with flying. You are more likely to die on your way to the airport than dying while airborne.

Bit strong mate, my post was quite clearly wondering on what might be the reasons behind an apparent lack of interest stateside. I wasn't going hard at the hypothesis - was really just musing it through.

Would you honestly consider the bolded to be 'just musing it through'? Sorry, no sold.

Your comments are pretty harsh mate. Tell me though, does the UK make national news out of every single accidental death on the island? (before you answer consider that we have the internet here in America and I already know the answer to that question)

Would it be fair for me to characterize Brits as "not giving a ****"? Hey, how about the > 1700 people that died in car accidents in the UK in 2015....? Can you show me national news articles for all of them? Why not? What does that say about Brits and how much, or little, they care for human life?

Sounds ridiculous when the shoes put on the other foot, doesn't it?
