Hi All

Just building a HTPC that will also be used for gaming (gta arma etc)

Plan was a 1080ti due to 4k screen however given current graphic card situations thinking a 1050 will last until new cards come out and flog this one. going into a small case but this is what im thinking What would you change ?

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £760.55
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Intel will soon have Coffee Lake releasing very soon (August) that will be a 6 Core i5 so I would hold off if I were you, also AMD Ryzen 1600 6 core/12 thread is a better bet that the stated spec and quite a bit cheaper as well.

Cheers its for my birthday mid august anyway sonhappy to wait until then. I have been looking at ryzen but always been dissapointed with amd performance over the years. Are these actually up to scratch?

Also thinking of grabbing a scond hand 980ti to get me by for a couple of months

AMD have been pretty much no-where for nearly a decade, they're back with a bang with Ryzen - its not clock for clock faster but you will get a PC that's 95%+ the speed, better longevity (the new socket will be supported for at least 3 years). If you are looking at i5 prices the 1600 will be quicker and cheaper. One thing with Ryzen is it does love fast memory so get something 3466+ memory.

The 980ti is still a cracking GPU, prob the best value atm - Miners are forcing up prices of everything else so its a wise bet. AMD are releasing/announcing Vega next week (its not looking great but you never know) and Nvidia have Volta out probably q1 2018 so a 980ti will definitely tide you over.

Does seem a bit confusing on the memory side of things, can some one point me towards a micro atx mobo and memory to suit a 1600? Also is the 1600x worth the extra?

Pop into the CPU section and there's a thread on Ryzen memory - https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/ryzen-ddr4-memory-what-you-need-to-know.18770248/page-35
OC's do sell some that they rate for Ryzen https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pc-components/memory/ddr4?ckSuppliers=432&ckTab=0&sSort=2
You can also ask the *** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) *** thread about what they would recommend for a board I'm not sure about mATX myself.

As for 1600/1600x depends if you are happy over-clocking or not - if you are 1600 all the way, also the 1600x doesn't come with a cooler should that be an issue for you

the ram u picked the LPX 3000 works fine with Ryzen its in all the youtube build videos.

that makes the Ryzen a little more attractive, was going to say if im spending another £60-70 on the ram i might as well get the intel i5. The saving on the Ryzen looks good and i cant help but overclock so the non X seems a bit of a bargain and see how far i can push it. not had an AMD since the AMD athlon xp days.
