Has the monitor versus TV technology gap narrowed?

Wouldn't use a TV for anything demanding accuracy or colour correct work personally. Wouldn't want to be sat that close to a large display either.

Give me a pair of Dell ips 27" 1440 all day long.
as a resolution I personally prefer 1440 to remove the need for scaling.

But the truth is these users don't have high end 1440 ips monitors and with current pricing and market trends they are unlikely to any time soon. What they have is 1080 tn panels and little interest in high end colour calibration. To a degree in digital design, for the wide array of end users I design for (both their screens and perception) these are likely to differ widely from mine anyway!

text readability is highly desirable at small sizes, but to my eye it far exceeds their current setup once hdr is switched off.

I got to view the Sony ZD9 yesterday and that's the only LCD I think I could use instead of an OLED, it definitely handles HDR content much better than current OLED's due to being able to hit a peak brightness of around 1500nits. This was in bright conditions in a store though, if you can have your OLED in a dark room it's not really a deal breaker as OLED is still ahead in almost all other areas. You're far more likely to get a decent OLED panel than a decent ZD9 panel too.

Until OLED TVs come in 21:9 aspect ratio and have exceptional response times for mouse input, a nice 34" 21:9 monitor is far better for use on a PC (work and play) than a big TV. I have a 65" OLED and that exhibits input lag whatever the resolution if I connect a PC through it on any connection. It's fine if I play games with a gamepad, but with mouse it's next to pointless trying to do any sort of online gaming where acceptable response times matter.

There is no beating the immersion of games and movies on a 21:9, which is why I'd love that new LG 47" 21:9 monitor, but only if they release a version with 1440 vertical res instead of the current one which is 1080.

Which OLED have you got because the newer LG's don't have any noticeable input lag and the response time is near perfect on any OLED.

The LG OLED55C7V is a fantastic display for playing games. Input lag measures an ultra-responsive 21ms in Game and PC modes, and blacks remain deep, even in HDR games. Movement of dark objects over a lighter background is also free of smearing and trailing, unlike some LED LCD TVs with slower pixel response time.

On this years range you can also do 1080p @ 120hz on them which still looks fantastic.

I agree though that for PC gaming and work usage 21:9 has it's benefits but it's hard to look at a screen (ASUS PG348Q) costing nearly as much as you can get an OLED for and not feel let down.

It's the 65EG960V - I imagine the last 18-24 months have seen some improvement in OLED panels, but at 4K resolution the input lag was noticeable to me at least anyway. There's no way I'd be using such a large display at 1080P for gaming. I'm used to 3440x1440 on the PC monitor, so at least that resolution is what I'd want in gaming situations. Media is obviously different.

Ah that model is 2 generations behind so it's not surprising, the input lag on that is around 2-3 times more than the 2017 range and it's obviously behind in a number of other areas too, don't even think it can do HDR from UHD blu-rays for example. I remember viewing those models at the time and wasn't as impressed by OLED.

Yeah, they introduced a firmware update of all the 2016 range so they are within 8-9 ms of the ultra responsive Samsungs, and there is also a 'HDR Game' mode as well.

ultra wide would certainly circle the square of not needing scaling, bezel gaps and actually fitting on a desk. Any recommended models at the lower end price wise?

no gsync freesync needed!
