Car stereo's on popular auction sites..

As others have said go for the proper VW kit, you should be able to pick them up fairly cheap used on various VW forums. It will look much better and will help to sell the car when it comes to it, rather than some 3rd party headset.

"Buy cheap, buy twice" is definitely something that applies to a device like this.

The cheap chinese ones will probably have sluggish hardware and have buggy, unreliable, outdated versions of Android. I've seen cheap Chinese tablets come with malware pre-installed as well, so that's something to be aware of. Not only that, but the actual sound hardware - the amplifier, the DAC and so on inside the unit will not be up to scratch.

I replaced the RCD-310 with an RNS-315 in the Wife's Polo. After selling the RCD-310, the total cost of upgrade was £200~ and that included buying a microphone, a GPS antenna, and a DAB antenna.

I also added the MDI (another £65~), which means we've got USB input (and iPod/iPhone) in addition to the bluetooth and SD card built in.

Yeah, if budget is tight just save up for another month or two? I've bought some new speakers recently, didn't fancy the outlay last month so just waited a bit longer.

Ideally I need a new HU but again I can't justify it at the moment so I'll change things slowly over time. Better that way than buying a cheap one. When it comes to sound quality the cheaper end of the scale is really noticeable.

I wonder how many of those bashing the cheaper android stuff have used one for a decent amount of time :) I had one in my mazda, @mrk has one in his e46.. my gf has one in her copen and all seem to work fine and sound quality is better than the alpine we replaced in my gf's car for e.g.

How cheap is cheap grudas? Some of the really low end Android stuff I've seen is awful.

No issues here indeed. It is Android, so there is an element of knowing how to set everything up involved. but it's not rocket science either really.

These units offer far more scope than any OEM navigation unit or stereo.

Looks like the real 510 is like £500+ so too high for my budget, found some 315's on ebay though. Im making a few offers see if they will let me have it for 200

Which units? Can you show some you mean

Other than needing a microphone running for the bluetooth voice funtions, yes it should be a case of simply swapping the units over.

The one I have is of no use to you as the unit is shaped to fit the E46 only, but you can get the same internals in your car's specific fit. Look for ones from makers like Eonon, Erisin etc for your car model in the search field. they all run Android (now on version 6 or 7) with 2GB RAM and at least a quad or octa core processor.

They are in the region of £280.

Hi mrk, what nav system do they use? you say they are android so could you use Waze on it for example?

Waze, Google Nav or whatever you prefer. I use Waze. Mine has a 4G dongle connected via USB and a 128GB stick for music. You have the Play Store so you can install any app. It's essentially the same as having an Android tablet but focused on car use. You can replace the default homescreen with whatever you prefer. Mine is fully customised like my phone using Nova Launcher.

Phone calls are via Bluetooth to your phone as per usual phone connectivity on any standard stereo.

If you are "well into your entertainment" then this is the least likely thing someone who was "well into their entertainment" would ever consider. Ever.
