Unless the guy did anything wrong such as look around or take anything then this could get him in trouble simply for trying to do his job. I appreciate walking in the house isn't exactly his job but if he's just trying to deliver the package then this could get him in trouble for trying to give good service. I'd have probably had a word with the guy and just pointed out that it's not the best idea in future to walk into someone's house and left it at that.
Entering a private residence without permission is illegal.

Yes the driver was wrong but he was doing you a favour in 2 ways. You got the parcel and kindly informed you that the door was unlocked

Let it go

so would i, and indeed sounds like the op would have done the same, if he hadn't scarpered.

therefore the only option is to contact the company and complain about this practice, then wether they choose to warn or fire the guy is on their hands, and will at least lead to them being aware of this practice and taking steps to prevent it.

Sack a guy for trying his best to deliver your parcel safely?

How dare you for blaming someone else for your incompetence at ensuring your own homes security

two ways of looking at it -

Annoyed that parcel was put inside the door, and the guy opened your door and came a few steps inside the house.
Or
Annoyed that parcel wasn't delivered.

How far in the house was he - couple of steps?

Personally, be happy I got the delivery and next time lock your door.

Not harsh at all, if someone came in my house without permission or even were seen trying the door handle I'd make sure they didn't get away with it. How dare they.

A lot of houses have inner porches (like my parents) where the outside door is unlocked and the inner door is locked. Parcels are often left there when they are out

How was the driver to know it was just the main door to the house?

Maybe driver thought you had a porch.

Possible, I used to live in a place like that. Basically 2 front doors and a small room between them with literally a shelf/some coat hangers in it.

This.

at least it was a delivery driver and not someone else. No one should be entering your house delivery driver or not.

I'd rather drag my self to pick the parcel up than know someones snooped in my house. Be tough getting past my dog though.

Indeed.

We have one, and we leave that unlocked so that we can have parcels dropped off that way.

There's no point in phoning Hermes and getting that guy into trouble. He did his job - in fact he was being proactive and actually delivered the package!

Lock your doors ;)

Are you people seriously saying you lock the front door every time you go for a shower? Or a dump? Where are you living, Baghdad?

As for whether it's illegal, trespass is a civil offence. You can sue the driver if you like, but good luck finding a solicitor who'll take that case.

That's how I feel. Seriously if anyone came in without permission they'd be lucky to get out without having a rape alarm aimed in their ear & a frying pan embedded in their head . I always lock my doors but if I make a mistake that does not give anyone the right to invade my home no matter what.

Exactly this, take it as a lesson learned that the driver has clearly highlighted a huge flaw in your home security.

Next time it won't be someone with honest intentions!

How is it illegal? Presumably the OP ordered the item being delivered. The delivery driver was acting on behalf of the company he bought it from and trying to fulfill the contract. It's not like the guy was a completely random person with no cause to try to deliver something. By leaving his door unlocked it could be argued that we was giving consent to the parcel being dropped inside the door. Regardless it's a civil law matter rather than a criminal one unless a criminal act was committed.

My girlfriend likes the front door locked anytime she is in the house, so when we are both there it does tend to be locked for her sake more than mine.

When I am there on my own I sometimes leave it unlocked, but I am in a private cul-de-sac with only 4 others houses. If I was on a main road it would always be locked.

well, yes, door stays locked at all times unless entering or leaving the house. the only time it stays unlocked for an extended period is when working in the garden or somesuch that means we'll be directly outside.

once it becomes force of habit it really isn't any massive inconvenience.

and no i dont live in baghdad ;)

i've been in the house many times when deliveries arrive and i'm too lazy or slow to get to the door in time and not once have i ever heard anyone try the handle.
