My virgin coil-whine

Hey guys,

I purchased a used Radeon 280 to hold me over for a couple of weeks till OCUK get there stock in for the upcoming VEGA..

Now my issue is..I have never had or heard any coil-whine in the past, and wondering if it is an issue? Or does it not degrade the card at all?

Im not overly worried as I said its only temporary and I have a two year warranty anyhow..

If someone can shed some light on this it would be great...thanks..

Run unigine valley , 1080p , should hear it, specially when you stop the program as frame rates sore. Can't miss the squeak bitch screaming at you .
Normally I run unigine and FireStrike stress for 2 hours a piece to rid any card of coil whine , if it's still there when gaming - after trying 2 spare PSU s, will RMA it

I wouldnt say it screams at me, but deffo something there while playing BF1..

I also have no access to other PSU but its only a year old, never had an issue before with it.. (EVGA G2 650W)..

You're most likely to hear coil whine when the card is putting out silly high frame rate. Say 2-300fps. You'll occasionally get this on loading screens if the 3D clock on your card is running before it really needs to. I would say it's pretty normal and while annoying, not likely to cause any degradation of the components on the card. If you have coil whine outside of running 3D applications I'd be more inclined to worry.

If you're not using freesync try enabling vsync and see if it stops.

Yeah, I wear a headset so isnt the biggest problem for me..

No, its under heavy load, while doing day to day things there is none..

Will try the VSync, I believe that the 280 series of cards arent Freesync compatible?

Ah sorry, I assumed the 280 would be freesync compatible.

It would be strange if BF1 was running at some crazy frame rate, unless you're playing with the settings dropped or at low res?

I think its the 290 series onwards it supports..

Yeah, I have been playing at medium, and getting around the 90fps mark, so not to shabby really..

You've got a bit of headroom there. Fire your settings up a bit and see how it goes maybe the coil whine will disappear lol

The 280s don't do freesync.
The 285s do.

My new 1080 GTX has some coil whine too, even at 60fps though only in games when under load, a bit annoying and I'd prefer it wasn't there but I can't hear it with my headset on so :shrug:

Same boat dude, I wear a headset, just my main concern was damage to the GPU, if not then im not overly worried about the noise, although it would be better (obviously) if not there!
