No Claims - This Can't Be Right?

So, I'm with Hastings who usually provide a pretty good quote, but no matter shopping around as you do! They discount up to "9 years or more", and on the policy it states "Maximum". Fine, so I call up and the woman states the above and that they would only produce a NCD policy for other providers up to 9 years? I get they won't discount more, but surely they will confirm that I have 12 years to other companies?

It won't matter either way in my experience - 9yrs is the most I've ever known an insurer take into account - ie. "maximum" in terms of a percentage discount!

It could be worse - some insurers only go to a maximum of 5 years - then you would feel ripped off! (but similarly, probably wouldn't be!)

Sorry to hijack your thread op but I would like to know what will happen when my current policy runs out with Aviva as I have heard they only count to 5 yrs and list that on your no claims proof when your policy ends but I will hopefully have 8yrs when it ends so how am I going to prove to other companies that I have 8 and not the 5 that Aviva list? As obviously 8 is going to mean a better discount with most other companies

Just a remark about how little no claims actually seem to matter these days

I've just run a quote on my current car and the quote with 9 years ncb is 60% less that the quote with no ncb.

^^ It varies hugely - I put my details in with exactly the same NCBs as one of my friends - our details are largely very similar and the amounts different due to NCB are way different LOL.

I've moved pretty much every year and recently haven't even been asked to produce evidence for no claims discount!

Hmm I've always been asked when changing insurer.

But 9 seems to be the max, with "discounts" stopping after 5.

This.

(and there isn't a "super-secret" central database of your no-claims bonus - more likely if you haven't been asked to provide proof either your broker/insurer have not done their job properly or you will be asked to provide proof in the event of a claim)

Wrong, CUE holds NCB info along with everything else :)

The CUE database holds claims information - not your individual no-claims bonus records - and even if it did, insurers certainly can't access it otherwise why would they spend so much time and effort on chasing individual policyholders for their no-claims bonus proofs?

I'm just renewing my insurance with Hastings as well, on 2 cars, oddly 1 says "NCD : Maximum", the other says "NCD : 9 Years"

Also the Mazda 6 has gone up £3, the 350Z has gone up £100....

Edit :

So after calling them, the Mazda has now gone down £6 and the Nissan up £7 :)

Insurance has gone up loads this year and the price comparison sites were as much as my renewal quote. My insurer included a schedule of NCB levels with my renewal, the difference between 8 and 9 years was 2%.

I don't think I have paid as much for insurance this year since my first years driving. I'm paying more for a 1.6 diesel hatch than I was when I insured our MX-5 a few years ago.
