Noticed during my 5 days of driving in England I only saw about 1 bicycle on the road...

Are bicycles always this rare in England ?

Depends where you are, most places haven't got the infrastructure to make biking worth while for most people, I generally only see bikers out on country lanes.

I most of been just driving at the wrong time of day or because it was wet and raining a lot of the time..

Or am just blind as a bat and there now all in ditch at side of the road...:p

Seems to vary hugely unlike some countries where its culturally either something people do a lot or don't do at all.

Near where I live if you go one side of the town where there is a lot of cycle paths, etc. there are tons of cyclists and people who work out there tend to have a higher proportion that cycle to work, go the other end where there are hardly any cycle paths, etc. and you'll encounter a lot fewer and very few cycle to work and so on.

I'd say it is fair to say that yes there is hardly any bike usage here. Local authorities tend to put in the absolute bare minimum to provide infrastructure for them though. On the flip side of that, cyclists don't really contribute anything so what incentive is there to provide for them?

Birmingham is NOT cycle friendly, although they're trying to change that. Lots of cyclists in the Warwickshire countryside though.

They don't contribute? ?

Most own a car anyway.

Not to mention they cause less congestion....

Northampton
Kettering
Corby
Birmingham (Hated driving around that town :( )
Milton Keynes
Milton Keynes is full of redways separated from roads. So if your driving you don't see any cyclists/pedestrians. Its one of the good things about the road network here!

You clearly didn't go to Cambridge :p
I was just going to say this!

I hate deliveries in Cambridge, the place is full of psychotic nutters on bikes who think nothing of passing a moving articulated truck on either(!) side, when it's turning, whatever!

They are either oblivious to the danger they put themselves in or don't care, I'm unsure which....

Milton Keynes gets a bad rap but for Cycling/Driving getting about it is very well planned out. The cycle routes are excellent. I would gladly live there.

It's just a shame nobody can comprehend the concept of lane discipline at a roundabout I'm Milton Keynes, especially with the amount of them.

I don't have a single day go by there without being cut up at least once because someone lacks the ability to read the road and get in the correct lane
