Does nobody buy a car outright? Am I missing something?

I find women want a brand new car even if it is a poverty spec diesel as long as its a German badge and has the current year on the plate. But i have found over the last year or so Men are not just happy with that anymore they want speed. Most yonger guy's now think your mugging them off if you out accelerate them from the lights or on straight roads. There fragile ego's cannot accept that your older car just left there brand new premium German whip behind so will drive there diesels on the red line and at dangerous speeds just to prove a point. They always want more power. I found it hilarious on a daily basis when i had my ST225 the look of pure anger in there faces if they couldnt squeeze in front of me "normally because they get in the wrong lane to push in front because they are superior" and would often get abuse from them because a 10 yr old Ford damaged there ego.

ST 225 isn't that fast off the mark... let alone one that is 10 years old! BMW 320i probably isn't too far behind you :P

Sure you aren't the only one treating these as races? :P

The ST225 is not fast but the Torque in 2nd gear is enough to see most cars off. My friend's 2010 330i coupe could not get past untill +50mph.
:p Ill have a little play if they want to pull up in the wrong lane and think they are just going to push in front of me out of arrogance. It happens twice per day on my way to work at the same places each time. Normally of the Audi and Bmw diesel variety everyone else joins the que and waits like a normal person.

One can't help but think that's it's you being the nob in most of these situations. If it's happening that frequently you're looking for it.

50mph to you from zero is 2 seconds to me.
and what? you have a supercar :D I dont race people off at every set of lights like a chav if someone wants to pull up in the wrong lane to push in front in a car like yours or a Golf R etc then go ahead you have the power to do it. But when its on a daily basis people in leased 116d's or A160's etc that have 140bhp and put themselves in a dangerous situation out of arrogance then they deserve it

My point was I can sense when people think they have beaten my supercar because I was on the phone, drinking a costa, singing to Steps or simply not even registering the chav on my number plate who just learnt me as he overtook me at full chat because he had bigger nuts. Sure he'll have a great time down the pub telling his mates about roasting a supercar, even if me as the driver was oblivious. I had a 335 do it the other day, I am convinced he thought I was trying so coming into an island I did and he became a blip. If I hadn't he would have in his mind have roasted an R8. People are odd, like the Mini owner driving down the M6 in the outside lane with legions of cars undertaking him. Oblivious :)

Trust me i am not. as i say there is 2 situations i face every morning going to work. One is 2 lanes merging into 1 and the other is 3 lanes with the right hand side lane being to go back around the roundabout. Every day without fail people will go in the right lane to go straight on rather than que behind a couple of cars and wait. Why put yourself in that position? If you have a really fast car that will have no problem out accelerating 90% of cars then fair enough go ahead.. But when your get the same arrogant chavs on a daily in 116d's, A3's and A160/180's thinking they will just push in front "because BMW" then i like to make them think twice :p

You spend a breathtaking amount of time making assumptions about people don't you?

Yes, the reason they pull in front is 'because BMW'. Obviously.

Isn't that like saying the reason you nail it off the line and block them is 'because old fast Ford'?

I wonder how often this really happens because it reads like the plot of 2Fast 2Furious at the moment.

It's all a bit dramatic really for regular running about

On my commute I honestly see very few people driving remotely quickly. Probably spend more time reminding myself to reel it in and not look like silly than I do finding anyone to race.

In terms of the actual original question to this thread I've done both - in all honesty I don't see a massive cost difference through having an older vs newer car with part of it covered through a low interest loan. If the newer one broke substantially but was out of any sort of warranty then that pendulum swings immediately vs something that only cost say a grand

Having said that I don't buy really new cars and have never bought an older one that I've kept more than circa 2 years so I am costing myself money either way.

It is though i dont have to make assumptions i hear it every day in work and from friends. The majority of people who go and buy any pov spec Audi, Bmw, Merc suddenly think they are a class above because of the badge. That also extends to often thinking its faster than any other Fords, Vauxhall's etc because its a more expensive premium car regardless of the engine. I hear people all the time telling others in work there new 150bhp tdi is a rocket and they actually believe them just because of the badge. Most automatically think say a normal BMW 1 series is faster than say an ST or VXR because its more expensive and its a BMW not a Ford. Look around next time your a passenger in a normal car at the amount of retards that pull up at lights and attempt to jump in front of you or out accelerate you and look at what cars they are driving. You will notice its the same cars over and over.

I quite honestly find the majority of people I work with belong in the "want a new car at £5 per month mate" bracket rather than thinking they've bought a rocket ship because it's a 2 litre diesel.

Tbh most people couldn't be less interested in talking about cars let alone claiming they've bought a cracker

It reads more like you've got an issue with anyone driving those cars to be honest.

Realistically what difference would it make if you just drove off normally and didn't entertain them? Most of the time you just end up piled up together at the next roundabout or set of lights down the road anyway.

I almost never find this. Ever.

Just read what you wrote? You have an old Ford but you feel you have a right of passage meaning you need to 'learn good' the drivers of similar cars because of the badge and you thinking how they think. Why do you believe this to be important, just let them go, your job is not to learn them because no one cares about you or thinks about you, but you seem to think the are.

Bit odd.

well i obviously live in an area full of chavs and the busy route i take to work at peak time each morning must bring out the worst in people in terms of trying to jump queues.

I live in an area full of chavs and I can't say I ever experienced what you experience? And I drive a car that attracts that kind of attention.

If you are standing in a que in a shop and someone comes from around the side to step in front of you you would not accept it would you? so why when people are in there metal bubble do they suddenly become arrogant and disrespectful and squeeze in front of people? Even if i drove a 600bhp supercar i would not push in front of people and cut them up by getting in the wrong lane like other people regularly do. I do let them go but then they look in there mirror at you with a smug grin on there face so i just accelerate. I am not the only one its common practice on PH :p

Same. I can't remember the last time someone tried to take me off the lights. I tend to spend more time getting annoyed with people who pull in to the right-hand lane at the lights and then proceed to crawl away so slowly that the creep on my Jag is enough to nearly go in to the back of them.
My experience with driving these days is that slow is the new fast. All the cool kids are doing it because mpg is the new bragging rights.
