Hi guys,

Bit of a strange one as I'm trying to help research for my other half's family, her brother is in a really bad place and the NHS isn't being particularly useful in all of this so we're trying to find private rehab clinics. Has anyone here either been through any or had friends/family go through? In particular, heroin addiction.

Unfortunately all of our googling so far is only striking websites that are more like sales pitches, often without prices, and the ones that they've contacted are all of course saying they're the best option and trying a very hard sell. I can't find any good impartial resources really.

I know this is a computer forum but the breadth of the user base has surprised me many times and hoping it will again!

Many thanks,

Tom.

I have no idea, but wouldn't one of the drug charities be able to help you on this.

Would certainly be my port of call for advice, or even your local GP for advice? I know already said the NHS wasn't being overly helpful but a different GP might be different?

I don't really know the details of what drugs were involved, but an acquaintance of mines brother had great success with the same facility that helped Russell Brand. It's called Focus 12.

Hey Tom,

My mum recommends Gisburn Park (she inspects these places). There's a few to go at.

Thanks, shall have a look.it being a charity looks good on the surface. Also not too far as they're Bedford way.

Fantastic thanks Dan! Will suggest it. It's not local but one of the places is in Denmark that they're considering so this isn't quite so far :D

Cheers I will suggest it.

Fwiw the one they're liking the most so far has quoted £4.5k per week which seems exceptionally expensive...they're willing to pay whatever if it truly works but I don't want to see them fleeced whilst they're vulnerable.

I think regardless of where he goes, a lot of it will come down to how much he wants to give it up. And also avoiding the people he mixed with when he was using, when he comes out the other side.

I wish you all the best. And you may want to take down all the info from this thread, just incase the mods decide to delete it.

If you want any more suggestions let me know Tom. Where would be local? Local could be more beneficial depending on the situation.

4.5k!!? That could buy a load of blow and hookers! Oh, wait... :o :(

After another chat with mother: Check out Affinity Healthcare (Priory etc), they have very good quality of care reports. Their living facilities are pretty decent but you do get what you pay for in that area, assuming you're going that route.

Also, check out the CQC website if you want to see reports on the quality of care of any places in the UK or want to find somewhere. If you're getting the hard sell, always ask look around and even meet a current inpatient if that option is available.

Quality of care doesn't always guarantee results, that depends on the person and what works for them, if anything (and if they want to get sorted). But it's a good place to start. Even if the results aren't what you want, a positive experience might make it easier when looking towards alternatives.

The Priory group was branded unsafe at the end of last year by CQC. Too many patients suicideing. They closed part of it down temporarily because of inadequacies
"But even after reopening, an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) found that the hospital, which has treated celebrities including Kate Moss, Amy Winehouse and Robbie Williams, was littered with hazards for vulnerable patients." The gave it the lowest rating for safety 'inadequate'

They have many many sites and services over the country.

As I say, visiting the CQC website and looking up the report for the individual sites will tell you what you need to know. Not all sites are the same, many will have bad reports. Priory has the disadvantage of dealing with highly publicised cases so shortcomings make the news. The point of the CQC reports is to make sure shortcomings are dealt with. I'm sure they will have been inspected again since that article with it being a year on, these things are constantly changing, as are standards of care.

In this article they refer to multiple problems at multiple sites. The problems & practices including under qualified staff are institutional & affect the way the entire group is run.
"A Sun investigation has found The Priory, which benefits from hundreds of millions of pounds of public money, has been criticised over a string of tragic cases up and down the country."

"CQC website shows, following its inspections, that units at Roehampton, Southampton and Hayes Grove, Kent, “require improvement”. “Safety” at Brighton and Bristol also “requires improvement”"

This. Just wanted to quote this for truth. Also to suggest you speak to your local NA (Narcotics Annon) groups. They'll have experience of your local rehab centres as they're all addicts trying to stay clean. I'm sure they'd be happy to give you some recommendations. Particularly heed the advice of those with a decent, long term sobriety.
