Been added to work WhatsApp group.

Surely there should be a option when someone adds you to a group you get a pop up saying .

"So and so wants to add you to so and so group, do you want to join?"

And then you can click yes or ignore, I don't get why it automatically add you?

I doubt they would be using WhatsApp to get in touch if they needed you for work stuff, seems a bit unprofessional.

If it is to get in touch regarding work, then leave.

There are blue chip companies, UK Government organisations using whattsapp for day to day business. It is easy and swift to send a whattsapp message to an individual/group and the sender can do it from anywhere.

I myself have informed our group of flight booking, meeting places, itinerary etc of business travels etc. I think people here would be quite shocked at whattsapp is being used among some agencies.

However, wrt the OP - i doubt there is anything in there contract, so simply remove yourself from the group. They should be explaining why you have been added as oppose to you justifying why you shouldn't be on it!

it is pretty disorganised though to have all that stuff in a single thread on a WhatsApp group, not surprising to hear it is being used in the public sector like that though... maybe in 10 years time someone will introduce slack

Not seen Slack - will take a look.

Do they not see who has sent them then?
Yes, but as it is his personal phone, and sent in none-work time, what grounds for punishment do they have? None. I wouldn't do it, but the reasoning is to prove a point which is why people are suggesting do it.

awful advice.

Even if you are not at work, your actions can affect your employability by a company and as such, your actions when "not on the clock" can get you in the crapper.

Yes, but your words are completely lacking in context. You aren't going to get sacked for opting out of a whatsapp group. It won't be in the contract for one.

I'd join but then just turn off whatsapp when not in work hours. Unless it's purely for lols and banter :)

But really, they should be providing the equipment for anything work related.

His words are in the context of sending lewd images to the group which is what the quoted post is referring to.

that's pretty dubious if the group itself is an official work group, say there is a female member in the group who then complains to HR about the pornographic image - you'd be in a whole load of trouble.

sure it is sent from your personal phone but it is being sent to a work resource - would you argue the same re: sending porn from your personal gmail account to a work mailing list where a bunch of managers are copied in etc.?

Had this argument with my old boss, what was worse was we had company phones (already in the group) but he kept putting my personal number in as well. He didn't seem to understand why I wouldn't want to be contacted on my own phone at any time.

What I found sad though was the amount of work my coworkers were doing through it late at night / in their own time. Absolutely no need for it and I can only guess they did it so they could be seen to be going the "extra mile". Thing is it meant that if you didn't respond straight away at whatever time you were seen as being a lightweight.
