Been added to work WhatsApp group.

The French have got it right with the law that bans the need to deal with work communications outside of working hours.

iirc the german trade unions managed to bag the same kind of deal, no idea if it got as far as to end up in german law though.

i'd do as others are suggesting and leave the group, but not kick up a fuss unless they started insisting.

Well I've left the group again. And contacted the guy who added me explaining my reasons. I think that's fair.

I'm actually on holiday until next Wednesday. (another reason I was annoyed about being added) Will be interesting to find out if anything is said on my return

Seems to be a trend then. In our work place a whatsapp group was setup in a similar fashion for on-call staff, but my frustration with it is that when it pings you aren't necessarily on-call that week. Bit annoying so i set it to mute permanent and then look at it when i want to.

Like what? If they want an actual work chat, you first need to agree to it, you then need to agree having on your personal device, then you need to have it in writing as to when you are expected to reply and if out of hours they needs to be agreed upon

That may be the way it should be done, but we all know it doesn't always work like that in real life and that won't always stop management having a whinge and moan about it.

I would remind the person who added you that you do not have a company mobile phone. If they want to supply you with one to use in your personal time then maybe you'll reconsider joining the group :)

Indeed.

However, if you have a contract, particularly if it states working hours, they can't just expect you work outside of them. You are also allowed and entitled to some privacy out of work.

Previous employer did this to me. Everytime I left he readded me. He then brought it up in a team meeting and tried telling me I wasn't being a "team player"

I told him if he wanted me to use my data then he would be paying for my contract. When he argued that "everyone else is accepting it" I replied with "well more fool them"

Things were very, very bitter between he and I, at this point.

If companies want to maintain contact with people outside of the office they should provide the hardware to do it, like a company phone & number. In one company someone once added my personal number to the GAL and as such I was regularly called over the weekends etc :( - The problem was that even if it was removed everyone already had it synced by this point.

Besides, Whatsapp isn't good for business use. Why not use something like SfB?

We had the same thing. Forced to use Whatsapp on our phones because it was decided to send out Priority 1 information this way when we had Service affecting issues. Had it for 6 weeks or so received one notification which was nothing to do with us. Never received any other notifications eg for the XP virus one recently and its gone quite now because the Service Desk Manager who forced it on us got sacked!

So if I were you I wouldnt worry about it.

I've uninstalled it now.

My work branch set up an unofficial secret Facebook group and added everyone in. I removed myself. I don't really want to see work propaganda in my own personal time.
