In the US - what tech should I get?

Is it really that bad? I see prices for tech on Newegg and places and it's always cheaper, video cards seem cheap as hell compared to UK prices.

Yep, you're seeing pre tax prices. You need to add sales tax on to those prices, which will be different in every state.

Oh and also technically import duty too if it's over something like £150. OP if you do buy something over there perhaps think about disposing of the box in some way (slow post is cheap)...

Nor sure what the prices are now with the mining price hike but in June I picked up a 1080ti for about £550 including sales tax which was about 6% when I was asked the guy at the desk. This was in NYC.

Tech was significantly cheaper when I compared prices....the issue was getting it back home.

voltage differences shouldnt be too much of an issue, anything that's usb charged you'll be able to use a generic charger on and anything else you should be able to pick up a uk version of the charger.

tbh i wouldn't be buying anything i wasnt already planning to buy in the uk anyway.

tablets are handy, especially if you do a lot of streaming content, i've been using mine effectively as a tv whilst living in germany, although i wouldn't say they're a substitute for a good phone unless you really preferr a smaller phone.

With the exchange rate and sales tax, the prices aren't much different to the UK. I've bought loads of Apple gear on previous visits but this time around getting a MacBook Pro would save *only* about £100 and I'd be stuck with a US keyboard.

Quite a few years back, it was $2.05 for £1, you would go out with an empty suitcase and bring it back full of half price swag.

You'll be in for a nasty surprise if you use the info in that link as a guide. TX, where I live, is listed at 6.25% and I pay 8 to 8.25% routinely in the DFW area.

In addition to the state tax rate you have to account for the city tax rate.... and each city can be different. There are about 15 to 20 cities that make up the DFW metroplex.

Trying to shop cities for the cheapest tax rate is pointless for the most part. Doesn't help you if they have a lower tax rate but no business that sells what you want.

I visit the US a couple of times a year usually with work (my trip in May/June was for a family vacation).

Everything seems way cheaper to me, and I usually do a mountain of shopping when I go (clothes, trainers)

In respect of tech I havent bought anything with a plug on it yet, its usually PC accessories and components but the only issue I can think of would be the difference in the plug draw from the wall.

There are step downn adapters for that kind of thing though.

I find clothes are much cheaper, especially in the outlet malls. But the OP is asking about tech, which is almost the same price as over here once the exchange rate and sales tax is factored in.

Personally I have always found tech cheaper as well. The last few bits I have purchased have been significantly cheaper.

For example even taking into account sales tax and currency conversion for my latest purchase I picked up my GTX 1080ti for around 150 quid cheaper stateside.
