Has anybody ever kayaked in Lake District, Lake Windermere to be precise.

Going up there in 10 days, hoping to kayak but would like to bring my own inflatable one, does anyone know if I can just plonk it in the lake and kayak? Or do I need a license or something.

Thank!

how would you get to the lake if you didn't go by the shoreline? Parachute in?

or you know certain parts of the shoreline that you are allowed to. which is why the second link is useful, as it has some suggested routes and as such some options for where you can access.

Windermere has several public launch sites, but over 90% of the shoreline is private and you'd be trespassing if you landed your kayak there.

Windermere is very nice but it does look a bit busy (just came back from there (not Kayaking)). There are motor boats but the speed limit is only around 6-10 miles an hour. There are a lot of private shoreline, but then there is a lot of money around that area now.

We stopped at a B&B (Stockghyll Cottage - bed and a room, so was fine for us) and they had their own private access to the shoreline just over the road from the cottage.

Best thing they introduced was the speed limit on Windermere, stops all the yuppies from London thinking they can just wizz about on the lake in their fancy boats :)
