Where will you go?

inspired from the other time travel thread thought it could be fun to ask the same question but a little more open.

so the rules are you have a one-way time machine- once you go somewhere that's it you're stuck there and will have to live the rest of your life there.

you can bring anything that you can carry on your person, but it has to be things you actually own, so no selling all your possessions and lugging a suitcase full of gold, and you'll need to be wary that if you go too far your money won't be valid.

you can go forward or backward in time and there's no limit as to how far, however the machine is limited to re-appearing in the same geographical location on earth as it departed, so if you leave from the top of the Eiffel tower and travel back before it was built expect a long drop.

you'll obviously be a stranger to the new time, so you'll need to integrate into the new society long term, and be wary that flashing modern fancy tech in the middle ages might well get you accused of being a sorcerer and burned at the stake.

so, where do you depart from, when do you go, and what do you take?

me, i'd go forward at least 200 years. would be great to see how far humanity could advance in that time but i wouldn't want to go so far that i'd end up being some kind of museum exhibit, and that my current modern knowledge would at least have some applicable uses. i'd take what few items of value i have- old pocket watches etc and hope that their value in the future will have appreciated enough to get me some starting capital for my new life, although i doubt i'll be a millionaire.

well you could wait a few weeks before departing but knowing that you/your future self intends to travel back in time to this moment and give you sufficient knowledge of future events, over the next few weeks, for you to place a load of bets and become seriously wealthy... so a minute or so after you come up with that idea your future self appears with said information... you then place those bets etc.. and then make sure to use the time machine to go back and tell your past self to do the same....

ahh yes, back to the future 2 style :D

yup... though with your present/past self already knowing that it is going to happen... so also kind of like the bits in Bill and Ted where they decide that they're going to, for example, place an object in the police station in future etc.. while making their escape :)

indeed, i shoulda wrote the whole "no using the time machine to get rich" into the bargain but i guess its too late now :D

also, i really wanna watch bill and ted again, such a film

its such a shame that you'd then have to live in a world where nobody would know your herosim
Oh, I'd be alright... I'd go chat with some folk like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, maybe lend them a few quid to help start their businesses, or something. Right before I go have a word in the shell-like of the chinless blunder that came up with JarJar Binks...

well, if you managed to get rid of beiber and jar jar i think you'll have earned those stocks!

Drop a few grand into a Swiss bank and then set the dials for 1.4million AD. Would be interesting to see what the Earth looks like with two stars in the sky and to see how many comets we get due to that twist of cosmic fate.

2024. I'd like to what is the left of the United States and the rest of the world after 8 years of Trump being in power. :p

(you know he'll get voted in again in 2020. :D)

You could go back to 1907, take a trip to Vienna, persuade the admissions tutor at the Academy of fine arts that it would really do the whole world a favour if they'd not reject the application from a young chap called Adolf.
