*Fun* 4 Seater Convertible?

And the boxster and the early 997!

No one ever looked cool in the back of a 4 seat convertible... not even your dog! However the OP surely is calling for a 3 series convertible?

Massively overblown for sure, but still a major problem with these cars. Scraping the bottom of the barrel of any marque is asking for trouble. £15k doesn't buy you much 911 at the moment and a boxster has 2 seats so is out of the question. You'd need to be a real 996 enthusiast and handy with spanners unless you're happy to spend decent money sorting out the niggles that a >13 year old performance car will have.

Soft top isn't an issue for me. I think an M3 would be more than i'd want to spend in the way of running costs. I imagine day to day it's a lot cheaper with just a regular 330i. Although maybe the lack of depreciation would offset that.

Saying that would rule out an old (or I guess a new) Porsche surely. Whatever 3 series you can get at that price with a decent petrol engine. Practical car that you could use when ever its sunny and still be quite fun on any decent B roads. Dog in the back I am not sure I would be throwing it around corners anyway, poor doggo.

5% failure rate is massive!

5% is massive??? For most companies 5% is good (I believe the 3.4 996's had a failure rate of 1%). Altho if its a small dog it could probably fit in the boxster boot:D. Like one of the previous posters said tho, basically the roof gets chopped off so there are lots of compromises.

Have to say, with the requirements, I'd be inclined to drop the "sports car fun handling" goal, and replace it with "nice comfy boulevard cruiser". I can't think of many 4 seater soft tops that I'd want to try to put around. Maybe an M3, or E46 330i.
Let's face it, how often do we even get to drive our cars to anything like their true performance capabilities. Last night, on my 80 min drive home, I had just two chances to genuinely use the acceleration capabilities of even my MX5, and that's gutless in performance car terms.

So how about consider something nice and relaxed, say an old Saab 93 convertible. They're surely cheap now?

Yeah it's massive. Take the last place I worked, if we had a weld failure rate of more than 1 in 1000 during the manufacturing process we were having a really bad time. We then wemt on ultimatwly to have a 2% failure ratenover the 25 year life of the product.

Audi has a higher engine failure rate than Porsche currently do (and is actually one of the worst! I think only Rover are lower), yet we don't hear loads of horror stories. Porsche rank somewhere around the middle.

You also have to consider that a lot more Porsche owners will be tracking/racing their cars. So they will get a lot of abuse.

For an alternative, what about one of those imported Suburu Forester STIs? Loads of space in the back for a dog, AWD, and up to 300hp. They go for under 5k for sub 50k miles one. Look like a bargain :D

All the FSTI's I've seen are going 9k+ the XT on the other hand seems to fall under that price category.

Just for reference i had a 996 c2 for 5 years and the only thing that need work was the clutch and rad/condensors (unfortunately the clutch was a grand and the rad/condensers would have been the same had i note upgraded to the turbo at that point). It was a fantastic car, especially with a modded exhaust, i actually set somebodys car alarm off in a mulitstorey:D.
