Does nobody buy a car outright? Am I missing something?

Still better than many modern cars for the same money. These are a proper workhorse (and quick). A base spec Skoda diesel isn't going to be any more comfortable, probably in much worse condition as well.

This is hilarious. Do you actually believe this?

In this day and age I don't think it is in any way unreasonable to expect this list in a family estate used car up to £10k:

1. Reasonable performance. It doesn't need to be a 300bhp monster but a 100bhp weed is no good either.

2. Mileage around the UK average of 12k per year of age.

3. Some modernish toys, like a partially digital dashboard, automatic headlights, xenons, automatic handbrake, stop/start, cruise control.

4. Less than 6 years old.

5. Nice quality smooth automatic gearbox.

6. Not worn out suspension or steering components.

7. Quiet on a motorway cruise. Good isolation from road and engine noise.

8. 40mpg or more.

9. Road tax of not more than £200 per year.

10. Full service history. Some components replaced as would be expected depending on age. Fluids replaced as per manufacturers recommendations (always seems to be skipped this one).

11. Looks decent. I.e wheels right size for size of car, not up on stilts, bit of a sporty body kit.

12. Expect it to last 5 years at miminal maintenance cost.

If I could afford to lease a new car, I would expect the above for in the region of £250 a month.

But your just not going to find a car that meets those requirements for that budget. One that isn't a lemon anyway.

I don't understand why not though. We aren't talking supercars here. These are just normal family cars with a bit of refinement. It's not unreasonable. 10 years ago a base Mondeo was about £18k, now it's what, £30k+?

Because that is what all the non-petrolhead, average family guys are looking for. So demand is higher for those types of cars :p

And there should also be lots of supply of these types of cars if they are what everyone wants. So the problem seems to stem from leasers buying the wrong types of car and saturating the market with hot hatches and tiny box cars.

No, a base Mondeo has an RRP of 21495 and is available through brokers for 17025.

So there should be loads of decent spec models around for under £10k at 6 years old then. That's 50 to 60% depreciation over 6 years which sounds about right to me?

Not trying to be pedantic here by the way. Genuinely trying to understand why I can't find anything I'm particularly ecstatic about when I put a £10k budget into autotrader. It just makes me disheartened every time. Then I go and look at leases again and quickly realise the monthly cost is well beyond what I'm willing to pay.

Yea but do a search and you mostly find sheds, or something with intergalactic miliage on it. Also many will be ex-fleet cars and been ragged to death by someone who didn't care.

The Autobox requirement limits options a bit, but even then there are lots of Passats and Superbs and Mondeos all fitting spec at sub 60k miles, just from a quick look on Autotrader. I've not check other models, but I'm sure there are loads.

Estate, auto, £10k max, 70k miles max, no distance limit.

Mondeo. 19 cars
Passat. 21 cars
Superb. 5 cars.
Hyundai i40. 13 cars
Volvo v60. 9 cars
V70. 2 cars
Insignia. 26 cars
3 series. 4 cars
A4. 0 cars

Yet to look at specs of each but it hardly jumps out as an abundance of choice. Majority seem to be base engines at first glance.

People in this country do not generally buy cars like Mondeos with automatic gearboxes. They sell few new ones which translates to few used ones.

I think Autos are just not very popular. An odd requirement, to be honest. Can't imagine most would want one. I've certainly ignored any autos when buying cars around that sort of class

So have I in the past and now at the age of 37 I wonder why I have. From what I read they are more effortless to drive in nearly all situations. Fed up of constant clutch dipping in city traffic. Why don't UK buyers want them? Autos are pretty common in the USA aren't they?

Combined with modern features like automatic handbrakes and radar cruise control and some decent power behind it, sounds like an excellent combination.

Well yes.

And they cost a lot when they go wrong.

I think the new generation of 8 speeds in the BMW's are as good as most DCT boxes really. They have moved on leaps and gains in the last 5 years. I'd still probably chose a DCT over one, manual over both where the option exists and makes sense, but they are all good these days, even in sports cars.

Very true, my wife wanted one this time around and we had to make compromises elsewhere.

I didn't however run around complaining that people buying new and speccing the car as they wanted were wrong so i could get the used car i want many years down the line :p
