I was thinking of popping over to that store that is a metal wire that you punch into paper (a competitor?) but then I realised that they closed all their stores and are only online.

I'd like to buy an office chair but how am I supposed to know what's right without sitting in it and trying it out, any ideas as I ideally don't want to spend more than £200 (unless it will last a long time).

I like ikea markus for that money. There are the racing style gamer chairs which are meant to be good. The dogs nuts are herman miller but thats out of budget.

If you've got an Ikea near you they have office chairs you can try out, I think there are still some old Staples stores that have been rebranded but to be honest buying an office/computer chair is a nightmare (my brother spent about 2 years looking for a decent one on and off).

I'm now using one of the Noblechair Icon's which is great but quite a way above your upper price limit.

Re the Markus, if you buy one keep the receipt safe, my brother has one and he's been unhappy with it for a long time (it started showing serious signs of wear after just a year or so).

Stealcase Leap v1 from 2ndhnd.

I picked up one a few weeks back.

Unfortunately I don't have an Ikea near me, was looking at the following:
Ikea Markus- some people say the armrests are very uncomfortable
Staples Kashmir- Padding wears out very quickly, some saying you end up feeling the metal base on your bottom
John Lewis Jefferson chair- slightly out of range (£299)

Not sure why adjustable arm rests are hard to find

IIRC the padding on the Markus Arm rest is quite thin, and my brother has been complaining about the fact he could feel the screws through it and it's quite narrow.

Adjustable arm rests are hard to find because it tends to require things like the support for the back of the chair be made differently (a lot of cheaper chairs use the arms to help hold the back in place), so it becomes more expensive to make the chair.

Had to take the arm rests off my markus as they were too high to and proud to let me get close enough to my desk. I think desk height just didn't work with the chair. It's absolutely fine but sometimes people on here get a bit too enthusiastic about them.

Had a Markus almost 10 years, its fine but I remember not being overly impressed with it at first
The chair before that was bought from Byte in the early-mid 90's Lasted pretty well!

I have the v2 version of that chair from the same web site... one of the best things I have purchased

Ah, havn't heard of that site before I'll check it out. I got mine from fleabay it wasn't in the best nick but it was by and away the cheapest on the site. Been over a year now still no problems with it. Best office chair I've ever owned.

I'd agree with the 2ndhnd refurbed chairs.

If you like to sit up, an HM Aeron is superb, if you like to slouch then a Humanscale Freedom. I also hear the Steelcase Leap is superb too but I've yet to try one.

I used to buy cheap chairs, now I've got my arse perched on this Humanscale it is heavenly, I won't buy another cheap chair!

Just came in here to say exactly the same thing! I got myself a Leap from there a while back and it's spot on, looks brand new and is more comfortable than any other seat I've sat on for a prolonged period.
